Baby Born with Her Own Twin Inside: Rare Medical Case in Hong Kong

Doctors Discover Rare 'Fetus-in-Fetu' Condition in Newborn

In a remarkable and rare medical case, doctors in Hong Kong have reported the birth of a baby girl with a partially developed fetus inside her body—a condition known as fetus in fetu. The anomaly was discovered shortly after birth and successfully removed through surgery. Fewer than 200 such cases have ever been documented globally.

What Is Fetus in Fetu?

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition in which a malformed fetus is found within the body of its twin. This typically occurs during early embryonic development, when one twin is enveloped by the other. The enclosed fetus can develop some body parts, such as limbs, spine, and in some cases, hair or organs.

Doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong confirmed that the mass found inside the baby’s abdomen included a spine, limb buds, and other partially developed skeletal structures. The mass was identified during a routine postnatal examination.

Surgery and Recovery

Pediatric surgeons performed a delicate operation to remove the mass just days after the baby was born. The procedure was successful, and the baby girl is reported to be recovering well with no long-term complications expected.

Medical experts believe the parasitic twin began forming early in the pregnancy but failed to develop independently, becoming trapped inside its sibling’s body.

“It is important to distinguish fetus in fetu from other tumors such as teratomas,” said Dr. Anne Chan, a pediatric pathologist not involved with the case. “What makes this different is the presence of an organized vertebral column and limb formation.”

Global Rarity and Significance

This is only the second officially documented case of fetus in fetu in Hong Kong, and among fewer than 200 globally recorded instances since the condition was first described in 1808. Most cases are discovered in infancy or early childhood, often due to swelling in the abdomen.

While not life-threatening when treated properly, such cases highlight the complexity of embryonic development and the importance of prenatal care and early diagnosis.

Public Reaction and Medical Curiosity

The case has sparked both fascination and concern among the public and medical community. Though extremely rare, stories like this shed light on the anomalies that can occur during fetal development.

The World Health Organization does not classify fetus in fetu as a congenital defect or disease, but rather as a developmental abnormality. The condition is not hereditary and does not typically repeat in families.
