Why is Burberry closing 10% of its stores worldwide?

Burberry is closing one in 10 stores around the world as part of an overhaul designed to take the luxury fashion brand more upmarket.

The 163 year-old company refused to identify the locations of the 38 stores earmarked for closure but revealed five had already shut in Brazil and Spain. The brand will instead focus on turning its flagship stores into luxury destinations for well-heeled shoppers.

Burberry, known for its trenchcoats and signature check, was the biggest faller in the FTSE 100 after its financial performance fell short of analysts’ expectations, with operating profits down 6% at £438m on sales of £2.7bn in the year to 30 March. Investors were particularly concerned about sluggish growth in the important Chinese market. The shares were down 5% at £18.26 in late trading on Thursday.

Marco Gobbetti, the company’s Italian chief executive, is overseeing a plan designed to turn Burberry into a super-luxe brand, in the same league as Gucci and Dior, which have higher prices and profit margins. Like the rival brands, Burberry wants to be able to design coveted leather handbags that can command price tags of up to £2,000.

Burberry replaced its longstanding creative supremo Christopher Bailey with another Italian, Riccardo Tisci, last year, and is in the process of rolling out his debut collection. Bailey, who was credited with helping to transform Burberry from a small UK company into a global fashion brand, left last year.

Burberry said the clothes and accessories designed by Tisci had been a big hit with shoppers, delivering double-digit sales increases on the equivalent ranges in 2018. But his designs only landed in stores a month before the end of the financial year, so this early success did not have an impact on the bottom line.

“We made excellent progress in the first year of our plan to transform Burberry, while at the same time delivering financial performance in line with expectations,” said Gobbetti. “Riccardo Tisci’s first collections arrived in stores at the end of February and the initial reaction from customers is very encouraging.”

Global Data analyst Chloe Collins said Tisci was revitalising a brand that was at risk of becoming “outdated and repetitive”. She added: “His dark grungy styles, previously seen at Givenchy, have provided a welcome update to Burberry’s classic tailoring and neutral tones.”

Earlier this month Burberry abandoned plans for a new factory in Leeds. The city-centre site, which had been at the heart of a vaunted £50m investment in its British manufacturing base, was a pet project of Yorkshire-born Bailey. The company is selling the 10-acre site, which includes Grade I-listed Temple Mill.

Gobbetti batted away the suggestion that it had been Bailey’s vanity project. “It’s kind of awkward to talk about ideas generated before I came,” he said. “Manufacturing in the centre of town is not the easiest thing … and in a listed building.” The company remains committed to its 800-strong workforce at its two sites in Castleford and Keighley, he said.

I had a most bizarre experience at Burberry’s in New York City in the late 1990s.

At that time, our office dress code was changing from white shirt with a tie to business casual - first on Fridays, then the entire week. So I was shopping for “business casual” shirts that would still look fancy enough.

I walked into Burberry and found two shirts that were really cute - exactly what I was looking for. I paid with a credit card (this is important) and took them home. (They weren’t “final sale” or anything like that.)

At home I discovered that there were holes cut in both shirts! They looked like someone took scissors and just cut the holes. I’ve never seen anything like that.

So the next day I brought the shirts back to the store, explained what happened, and asked if I could exchange them for shirts without holes.

The CSR immediately went berserk. He screamed that I had cut the holes myself, and threated to call the police and have me arrested.

I said, “Fine, I’ll leave the shirts here, and take it up the credit card company.”

At which point the CSR processed the refund while mumbling something.

I haven’t been to Burberry ever since.

Some high end brands prefer to destroy out-of-season items, instead of selling them with a discount at a sale or outlet like other brands do. A friend worked at Dior and they slashed the purses with a box knife in the presence of a security guard.

They do this to maintain their exclusivity and luxury status. In this context giving their outdated branded items to charity would be quite counterintuitive, don’t you think?

Cruel? Perhaps. But that’s what their customers are paying for, not to see the their $3000 coat on a homeless person the next year.

Are there any Irish luxury brands such as clothing like Burberry in England?

Yes, but it’s a tricky question to answer.

Personally I think the Royal family have done a lot to raise the profile of the Irish Designers. Allow me to explain, if you are into labels and fashion, then you know Irish designers have won a lot of prizes, but they don’t gain traction on the high street. The UK press has also focused on Philip Treacy, who is an award-winning haute couture milliner from Ahascragh in County Galway, he became ‘known’ to the general public when the Royal Family, specifically Meghan Markle and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge started wearing his hats.

There are other Irish designers but they aren’t ‘known’ in the High Street as well as Burberry to most people. However, there is one brand that certain people who wore Burberry or at least Burberry copies will know, and it too is Irish, it is the luxury brand Primarni. OK I admit it, Primarni doesn’t exist, it’s just a mash-up of the words Primark and Armani, because it’s very cheap clothes you can wear to look nice when you are on a budget. Irish people already know Primark by its local name “Penneys”. But I wouldn’t call either Penneys, or Primark, a luxury brand, however Primark is very well known.

Just luxury brands alone, and not clothing, then you have Waterford Crystal*, Newbridge Silverware, Valentia Slate**, Lir Chocolate, etc. The list is much longer and more well
known.

*But a lot of Waterford Crystal is now made in Poland

Which is better, Versace or Burberry?

That all comes down to opinion, and I wouldn’t say that either brand is “better” than the other. They both have their place in the industry.

While I love me some Versace, I would say I like more of Burberry’s products overall. Their garments are just more of my style and I’d probably wear more of their stuff if I had the money, rather than Versace’s. (Except for shoes) I prefer their coats, bags and I LOVE their military inspired-clothing and jackets.

I used to buy all sorts of brands when I was in my 20’s; mostly for trends and cheap prices. Then I moved onto more well made higher quality commodity brands like Banana Republic and Jcrew. Some of them lasted a few years but most of them lost their shapes in a couple of years. Then I tried more expensive but still stylish brands and ended up with g-star. About the same time, I got an expensive gift from my then-fiance which was a Burberry trench coat, a prosum line. That was my very first proper luxury clothes. Not knowing much about luxury clothes, I had to wear it for a season to truly appreciate it. I don't know how many times I wore it that season. It was so versatile; I could wear it for formal events or put it on top of a t shirt and training pants. That was years ago. It still looks new. I gained a few pounds but it still fits well - I don't know how this can be true but it does.

Since then, I have been replacing my outerwear with Burberry coats and jackets. They don't lose shape, the fabric does not deteriorate easily and fit me well. In fact, my coats looked good on most of the people who tried them on! The quality of the fabric, craftmanship and the fit are just superb.

Now I don't spend money on other cheap stuff that will fall apart after a season or two - with an exception of basic tees that I replace every year. The outerwear by Burberry is an investment. It is not as pretentious as LV or Gucci, not as ridiculously expensive as Channel or Hermes. But it brings you what matters - quality, fit and status symbol.

What are some scandalous facts about big brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Prada?

I don't know much about the House of Burberry or it's designers. It does have the royal seal of approval, so I doubt there's much too shady about anything that goes on there. And to be honest, their designers have never been “celebrity” fashion names like Marc Jacobs running LV, Karl Lagerfeld running Chanel and Fendi. I don't have much for you there. Sorry.

The only “scandal” I’d consider about Prada is that they supposedly ruined men’s English shoe brand, Church’s. They are a relatively small house. Owning Miu Miu (head of design at Prada (Miuccia Prada) started said brand), Church’s, and 3–4 other non-fashion companies. Not much there.

God, Louis Vuitton. I can only assume by naming Louis Vuitton you don't know that they are the head of essentially a luxury conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). Yes Moët Hennessy like the expensive champagne/liquor. LVMH is a massive company and owns numerous (Seriously look it up) big-named brands in food and wine, clothing, jewerly, etc. It's insane.

There are numerous scandals to pick from. Just search for any of the LVMH brands and you'll find some good reads. I've found two specifically that are fantastic reads:

John Galliano - Wikipedia

short-story: John Galliano was the head of Dior for a few years, as well as worked in many other houses in the LVMH family. He had a serious drug-problem and eventually crapped out from the stress of it all and went on a massive anti-Semitic, racist rant while high on God knows what. He was subsequently fired from everywhere and struggled a lot since with depression and therapy. His video was viral and was a PR nightmare. Personally, I think he has done an amazing job recooperating and making amends with the Jewish community. But this was a very, very big deal when it happened. Made front-page news worldwide.

And: Louis Vuitton supported the Nazis, supposedly. I don't know the story; I just found it online but is definitely a “scandal” piece.

If you want durable, high quality clothes with timeless fashion, then they're definitely worth it.

My personal suggestion is to avoid the items with the house plaid splashed all over them. Very naff and classless, and one might be mistaken for new money.

Alternatively one could go for even more durable and exclusive clothing - I’d recommend Holland and Holland. Thankfully they don't have logos splashed all over them, but then again their clientele don't feel compelled to impress others either.

What is the best wool coat for woman for surviving the NYC winters?

Assuming you “dress” for work, I suggest a long, cashmere or camel’s hair coat, preferably double-breasted, so there’s extra coverage in front. It’s a coat in which you’ll always look dressed up, even though it can be worn with slacks. It offers warmth without the bulk, so it’s easy to maneuver in.

In the western part of the state, wind is a serious issue, but, if all those buildings block the wind, the length of the coat won’t matter as much.

Avoid polyester lining if at all possible, as it compromises the warmth of the wool, though less so with cashmere. I find the hot/cold/hot/cold effect of polyester so annoying, I’d probably have the coat re-lined in acetate.

I’d also buy the coat in Keokuk or some other midwestern city, so you can pay a more normal $250 for cashmere not on sale instead of some outrageous sum in NYC. Wishing you great fun in the Big Apple!2.1K viewsView 1 upvote1

Unless the watch requires specific bands (looking at you, Apple) you can use ANY band that fits the lug width (20, 22, etc). Bracelet, Band, Strap - as long as it’s the right width you can attach it. If it requires a specific band, I’d assume from the company itself. If it’s an old watch you could check eBay or any site online.

It’s a British brand, we should be proud of it, but we aren’t, it’s just another brand amongst many others.

I personally have worked with Burberry, I approached them for a donation of unwanted garments, fundraising was a different part of the charity, I only dealt with Charity Retail. Burberry very kindly supplied our charity with a lot of gifts in kind, mostly waste material and slight-second clothing that could be ragged and converted into funds for our charity. Burberry was the only high-end fashion label to do so at the time.

But when they decided to burn all their surplus product to control their image and raise its brand profile, I was very disappointed. They could have remembered the charity and worked with the organisation to shred and recycle it properly instead.

Burberry is a premium designer label, and Ralph Lauren encompasses a number of brands, with some of them being premium designer labels. Yes, Sandringham is the slimmest cut in the heritage trench. Considering your height and weight, I believe 46 or 48 would be the best option for you —- if you would like to wear upon a shirt only, 46 fits better and looks sharp , otherwise go 48 (classic style with trench + suits + shirt). I bought a london trench several years ago, which is similar fit between Sandringham and Kensington. I am 170 / 68 and went to 48 finally - formal dress code needed… though I favored 46 more. Not at all. Fast fashion refers to clothing that is produced inexpensively, and is very trendy. The turn around time to produce fast fashion is generally very quick, so they can react to the trends as they are happening. Because the items are inexpensive, and are often things that are of the moment and won’t be fashionable for very long, they are viewed as “disposable.”

Burberry and Belstaff make high quality products that are relatively expensive. Both houses are rooted in their brand’s heritage, although they also make modern, fashionable collections. I would say that in many ways, Burberry is the antithesis of fast fashion.
