This article follows my first post on how to recognize a manipulator .
Now that you know how to spot the actions of a manipulator, the challenge is to know how to thwart him . How to get out of its clutches?
I am going to introduce you to the quilt technique , in 4 simple steps, to use to outsmart a manipulator and exactly what happens when you ignore a manipulator.

But before that, you might be asking yourself:
Why the name “eiderdown”?
The comforter is a quilt made of down. It can be soft and mellow. It can therefore be used as a shock absorber .
The quilt technique is not used to resolve a conflict, but to avoid entering it , maintaining it or making it worse.
Faced with a manipulation, the intention of this technique is therefore to absorb the shock or to limit the attack of the manipulator . Or even to avoid it altogether, with training!
The quilt technique to outsmart a manipulator
It is composed of 4 stages , of gradual intensity . This means that you have to use the first step first. If it is not sufficient to stop the manipulation, then go to the second. And so on.
These 4 steps should overcome the majority of manipulators you meet.
If not, it probably means that you are up against a badly-intentioned and seasoned manipulator. Yes, there are some who train every day!
The damage of such a manipulator can be considerable. The only solution, as described in my previous article on manipulators , is to leak !
Dare to remain silent in the face of the manipulator!
Step 1: Be silent
When faced with manipulative sentences or behaviors, be silent ! Remember what you were going to say or do.
This allows time for the emotional impact to subside.
It may then be that the manipulator is destabilized by your silence and stops his manipulation.
Step 2: Ask contextual questions
Do not play his game. Do not respond to his requests either.
In return, ask a mirror question .
Example: "- Relations with this person are really complicated ...
- Complicated? "
Also ask a factual question to contextualize the situation, and avoid going back over the content.
Getting the context clear allows us to get out of the emotional and stick to the facts . Don't we say that the facts are stubborn?
This will bring clarity , constructive thinking and reestablish positive contact . In 85% of cases, the manipulation will stop there.
Step 3: Metacommunicate
Metacommunicating is leaving the content of the conversation and talking about the process taking place.
To do this, talk about what is going on between you , and not about the subject of the discussion. Express how your relationship is going. You can also share your feelings and emotions .
For this to work, it is important that you stay in a caring and constructive posture .
This is how you describe the event from above. You are then in the “meta” position and you metacommunicate.
The fact of discussing the situation often allows enough perspective for the manipulator to stop his office.
If the manipulator continues, then take out your diary and give him a later appointment to save time
Step 4: Make a later appointment
Arrived at this stage, it is that the first 3 did not work! You are faced with a tough manipulator , who perhaps is not even aware that he is manipulating ...
It is then the moment to slip away to better come back later.
Indicate your need to take a step back so that you can go further. Then offer to continue at another time.
Take the lead in the conditions : when, where and with whom.
Finally, confirm with your interlocutor.
It is not a question here of deflating, but of a deliberate tactical choice . The goal is to take the time to think about what is going on and come back with better strengths .
It's up to you to act now!

- Train yourself to outsmart a manipulator, as soon as the opportunity arises: at work, in the street, in the store, at home ... Mastery only comes through experience.

In a work or business setting, you can unmask a narcissist by observing these:
1. They ignore you when you're just an employee but like you when you're promoted. They may even give lots of freebies after your promotion.
2. They barely greet you in the morning even though they're not introverted.
3. They tend to boast about your work.
4. They can intimidate you when you need to get paid, especially in a business where you have to split returns in a ratio analysis.
5. They tend to want to appear bigger than you when talking to customers, even if you're the boss.
