WhatsApp Tests Usernames to Protect Privacy and Hide Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is rolling out a major privacy-focused update in beta that allows users to chat using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, fundamentally changing how people connect on the platform. This new feature mirrors systems used by Instagram and Telegram, letting users join groups and message others without revealing their personal contact information.

Screenshots from the beta reveal a new “Username” section in profiles, as well as early hints of username reservations before the feature fully launches. Verification tools are also in development to prevent fake profiles and stop username hoarding.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said:
“This feature is designed to give users more control over their privacy while still allowing seamless communication with friends, family, and groups.”

Industry analysts note that this change could redefine digital privacy on one of the world’s largest messaging platforms. By shifting from phone numbers to usernames, WhatsApp is prioritizing user anonymity and identity protection, which may influence how other messaging platforms evolve in the future.

Tech experts see this as a long-overdue move for privacy-conscious users:
“People have been sharing their phone numbers for years just to use messaging apps. This update gives control back to the users,” said Jordan Lee, a privacy consultant.

Beta users report that creating a custom handle is simple and offers the same functionality as sharing a phone number, but with added security. Once fully rolled out, WhatsApp plans to implement verification processes to ensure authenticity and avoid scams.

The feature is still in testing, but its potential impact is clear: by giving users the ability to communicate without exposing personal numbers, WhatsApp could set a new standard in social media privacy.
