Delta Flight DL237 Evacuated at Atlanta Airport

The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 AM ET on July 13, 2026 as Delta Air Lines Flight DL237 was preparing for takeoff from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) en route to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Passengers reported seeing smoke and smelling a burning odor inside the cabin shortly after the aircraft began taxiing to Runway 27R.

The flight crew, led by Captain James Richardson and First Officer Sarah Patel, immediately initiated an evacuation. Passengers used the aircraft's four emergency slides to exit the Boeing 737-900ER (registration N836DN) onto the tarmac. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department responded within three minutes of the emergency call.

"We heard a loud pop and then smoke started filling the cabin," said passenger Michael Torres of Marietta, Georgia. "The crew was amazing. They got everyone out calmly and quickly."

No injuries were reported among the 186 passengers and 8 crew members. All passengers were safely evacuated and transported by shuttle buses to the terminal.

Delta Air Lines spokesperson Drake Castañeda released a statement at 10:30 AM ET: "Delta Flight DL237 was evacuated as a precaution after smoke was detected in the cabin. All passengers and crew are safe. We are working with the FAA and NTSB to investigate the cause of the incident."

Delta has taken the aircraft out of service for inspection. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have opened an investigation into the incident.

Delta Passengers Rebooked After Aircraft Taken Out of Service

Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and founded in 1924, is the world's second-largest airline by passenger traffic. The Boeing 737-900ER involved in the incident was delivered to Delta in 2018 and had 12,500 flight hours.

Passengers were rebooked on alternative flights, with Delta offering travel vouchers and hotel accommodations for those affected. The airline said it is prioritizing passenger safety and conducting a thorough investigation.

The FAA has grounded the aircraft pending inspection. The NTSB has dispatched a team of investigators to Atlanta to examine the aircraft and interview the flight crew.

This is the third Delta incident in 2026. A Delta flight was diverted to Nashville International Airport on March 22, 2026 due to engine issues, and a Delta flight was delayed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on May 10, 2026 due to a mechanical issue.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian is expected to address the incident at the company's quarterly earnings call on July 20, 2026.
