Latest Innovations And Insights: Smartphones Are The New Fitting Rooms.

Shoppers want to see, feel, and try on apparel before they buy—it’s one of the most important factors impacting a shopper’s decision to purchase. This tactile IRL shopping experience is why 55% of shoppers  browse clothing stores in person instead of online.

When the coronavirus made it impossible for these shoppers to access showrooms and fitting rooms, retail brands had to find new solutions. One of the ways many retail brands were able to stay afloat—and in many cases grow—is how they adapted to their shoppers’ needs with new virtual experiences.

Apparel brands including Hermès and Kering (which owns Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta) didn’t see dips in sales between 2019 and 2021. Hermès alone saw 44% growth in 2021 compared to 2020, and 33% growth compared to 2019.

The virtual fitting room: A new way to shop.

A concept tested by just a handful of merchants a few years ago, virtual fitting rooms are now taking the retail market by storm. These immersive online spaces use augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to help shoppers find the perfect item, bridging the gap between online and offline, and giving online shoppers more confidence to purchase products from the comfort of their homes.

The market for these experiences is expected to grow to $12.97 Billion by 2028, and luxury fashion groups are leading the way. Brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Burberry are already executing it flawlessly. Shoppers can try on shoes using their phone camera, visit online styling rooms, assemble outfits in a virtual store, upload pictures of themselves to try on a shade of lipstick, and more.

While these immersive experiences are exciting and convenient for online shoppers, nearly half still prefer the in-store shopping experience. Here’s how leading brands are bringing more of the IRL shopping experience into the virtual fitting room:

Virtual consultations.

Purchasing a pair of shoes, or even jeans, online can be a nerve-wracking experience. Fortunately, in-store stylists can now connect live with these shoppers using only a smartphone, demonstrating products and sharing personalized recommendations via text, chat, and video. In 1-on-1 virtual consultations, stylists show shoppers products up close and even provide video and images to help them understand how a product looks and feels.

For example, rag & bone offers 1:1 consultations with online shoppers to help better identify the correct items for them, sharing the fine details of the brand’s expertly-crafted pieces directly from the physical store.

Since starting virtual consultations in January 2020, rag & bone found roughly 58% of conversations initiated by shoppers related to sizing and fit. While customers typically only have a few static sizing tables on the website to reference, 1:1 virtual consultations bring them insights from someone who truly knows the ins and outs of every product—and has that exact product right in front of them. And by ensuring sizing is right up front, the brand is able to cut down on costly returns as well.

Virtual clienteling.

Building strong connections with online shoppers is critical for ensuring virtual fitting room experiences result in sales and return visits.

Retailers have used in-store clienteling—the process of proactively communicating with VIP customers based on their shopping behavior and past purchases—to build these connections for years. Today, leading brands are maintaining these relationships virtually.

Virtual clienteling empowers stylists to build relationships far after initial consultations with online shoppers, giving them tools to keep the conversation going through texts, email, and WhatsApp. Stylists are tapping into virtual clienteling to recommend products for shoppers undergoing long-term home projects, to stay in touch about restocks and sales, and more.

Apparel brand UNTUCKit employs an expert team of highly knowledgeable store associates who now offer shoppers virtual consultations—covering everything from style recommendations to fit expertise. And post-consultation, associates leverage virtual clienteling to close sales and encourage repeat purchases. In fact, from 60,000 virtual consultations, UNTUCKit launched from May 2020 to January 2021, 88% of these shoppers purchased within 24 hours of their session, and 17% requested a second consultation.

More and more brands are embracing virtual fitting rooms and making it easy for shoppers and stylists to connect live from their smartphones or computers. E-commerce is booming, and shoppers also still want human-driven experiences; brands need to adapt to these changing preferences.

Brands are leading the way by adding layers of personalization, authenticity, and creativity to their virtual experiences—and it’s working.

A new Apple invention could make iPhone cases a thing of the past. The “Protective Mechanism for an Electronic Device” identifies when a phone is falling and adjusts its center of mass to control its landing. The patent for the invention was recently published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Although the iPhone is specifically mentioned in the patent language, this technology could extend to any device. It works via a sensor that detects when a device is in free fall. Better still, it knows how the device is positioned relative to the ground, and makes internal adjustments accordingly. When this happens, the mechanism can re-position the device while in flight and have the impact only affect a non-vital area or portion of the handset. It does so by changing its angular velocity,

Apple is not participating in a "Smartphone innovation race". They surely fueled the race to get it to where it is now, but for the last years Apple is following a strategy of: 1. Let's see what level of specification I can reach for ~250$/unit this year. 2. Let's see for which service or feature I can use the iPhone as deployment-vehicle this year. #1 makes it look like they lost pace in the last years and others are catching up. But in reality Apple is not racing anymore for several years. They just see how much they can get for the same or lower price as the year before. The reason why the gap to others is closing is that there is so much competition happening especially among Android vendors today, that innovation is hitting the market now constantly and in small steps, rather than yearly and

And while the market did return to positive growth in Q4 2020 and carried that momentum through the first half of 2021, it remains doubtful if smartphone shipments will ever return to the level reached in 2016. Back then, Apple, Samsung and the like shipped 1,473 million devices, marking the industry's peak so far.

The one innovation I anticipate will be the reduction of costly features that we don't need in a smartphone and bringing the reduction in pricing to the smartphone markets. We already see this with the Pocophone , Mi A2, Nokia 3.1 -5.1–6.1 , and now with Motorola Moto G7 Play . These all are great devices and all very reasonable for the average person on a budget. Just a few years ago a budget smartphone was trash pure and simple. They could get you by until you could throw it off a cliff but were a pain for what they offered . Now we have modern smartphones with prices under 2 and 300 dollars that offer what flagships were offering just a few years ago. Some even more recently like 1 and 2 years ago or like the Pocophone it has todays internals like the flagships. That is innovation. Goo

The first smartphone came out in 1992, and looked a lot more like a radio with a screen. However it still had the basic features of many phones today, such as touch screen, email, calculator as well as many other apps of the time. Now, 3 decades later, we have super computers that can easily fit in our pockets, and can do just about anything. It has the built in multipurpose functionalities of a camera, web browser, game console, landline, wifi router, media player, and much more. However, this is I believe this is still one of the earlier stages in the smartphone era, every few years, newer features are released with one of the most notable recent ones being augmented reality. We have also seen in many movies phones that appear to have see through screens, or can project holograms, or can

This is an ongoing debate where choosing one side can be really difficult. The problem is each product has its own product life cycle, where it's introduced, it gains popularity, then it gets to the peak point. Peak point is the point where this product sells the most. However, there is no increase in the rate of growth anymore; in fact, what follows a peak is a decline. I think it feels like smartphone innovation is at its peak because we have experienced some groundbreaking innovations in the early 2000s. In contrast, the upgrades we get with smartphones today just don't feel worth the leap. During that period, we had the first smartphone with a glass touchscreen or support for multi-touch. It was also the first time they put a camera to the back and the front of a smartphone device. Ear

One word: Social Media. With the increase in usage of apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, people are always in a mood to share the stuff going on in their lives with others. With apps like TikTok, people are now filming themselves and sure they want to look good in that too. This is really psychological. Bare with me for a moment of “deep thinking”. Temporary relationships, temporary friendships, loneliness are some of reasons people just want to become more of Instagram influencers. It gives them a sense of a following and that even though you are not able to see the other person, you can talk. Increase in use of TikTok can show how much desperate people are to get noticed. People want stardom, people want to make other people jealous, be a big time star with viral videos and much m

Smartphones are now in a mature industry, being about 30 years old. In mature industries, innovation is evolutionary not revolutionary. Innovation is subtle, not dramatic. We see faster SOCs, better displays, faster and more storage, faster and more RAM, faster more secure and more capable Operating Systems each year. Together they add up to a better product compared to a few years ago, but mostly nothing so dramatic that people feel they must run out a buy a new one each year. That’s because the tech has advanced to the point where mid range smart phones are good enough for most people, so they hold onto their phones until EOL. My first three smartphones were replaced after a year each, because I learned I needed more than what was offered. The phones still worked but I had outgrown them.

I think augmented reality is going to absolutely take dominate technological innovation in the next 15 years. I think people who say VR is going to be a pioneer are being a bit too ambitious. Although we often do wish we were anywhere else but where we currently are, most humans do in fact enjoy day to day interactions and enjoy the physical world around them. Augmented reality is the perfect balance and what we need. Years ago, a man by the name of Pranav Mistry demonstrated at a Ted Talk something he had developed at MIT’s Media Lab - 6th sense technology. It was perfect - the right mix between interaction between the physical world and the one we generate in microchips. I think its falling was that it was too ahead of it’s time. In a way similar to the Concorde with the supersonic flight

Creating ‘potrait mode’ i.e. images with background bokeh effect with just a single camera is definitely something to be considered as an innovation. The way Google did this in its 2017 Pixel devices clearly proved that it indeed, is a software company. Another leap in technology has also been registered, by Apple. With its superior hardware components, it created the so-called FaceID, which is definitely an innovative approach to improvement in smartphone security.

well there are various opportunities for future smartphone innovations and these might not be shortcomings of the iPhone necessarily. but one obvious shortcoming to iPhones is the lightning port , while the entire tech industry has accepted USB-C as a standard , Apple still prefers the profits over convenience. this thus arises an opportunity of a seamless charging solution that can be used as a standard across all tech products, like the true wireless charging solution Xiaomi has recently unveiled. (rumours also suggest Apple’s plan to entirely remove the port as early as 2022) the other opportunity is with the battery tech, iPhones and every other phone in general are still stuck with lithium ion battery cells. but now as graphene and other suitable substances come into the picture , it o

Apple hardly seems to be resting comfortably. You can’t be on top while resting comfortably in a highly competitive market. Apple focuses on making the best device. Adding gimmicks like hand waiving gestures in the Pixel 4 may seem like innovation to some, but if it’s a feature nobody will use or care about (and they won’t), then it is not a true innovation. It’s far better to focus on things that actually matter like performance, camera capabilities, security, privacy, etc. Looking at the two most recent phones on the market, the iPhone 11 series and the Pixel 4. The Pixel is generally considered a disappointment while the iPhone 11 series is considered a success. Why? Because Google squandered the lead in the few areas they were actually better like night sight and focused instead on dumb

Hello friend, As we are now enjoying a New Year, it is the perfect time to gaze at the future. I think smartphones will undergo a radical change in 2020. A smartphone will then feature multiple cameras much like the Samsung Galaxy A9 which is creating waves because of its four rear cameras. Just have a look below. Also, foldable phones will become popular as Samsung, LG, and other leading phone manufacturing companies are already planning to launch such phones. Catch a glimpse of these future phones. There is also an increased possibility that you will be able to roll out your smartphone’s touchscreen on a table like a sheet of paper. LG is working on it and has already filed a patent for the technology. Also, there is a possibility that smartphone in 2020 will become transparent. Sony a lea

For over a decade, I’ve been saying that smartphones will, starting in about 2015, begin to evolve into true assistants. I would call this the AI Butler, or I-Butler. The Google Assistant was a first attempt at this. It certainly won’t be the last. As speech recognition becomes nearly perfected (there will still be issues with infections such as colds, background noise and so forth, but less and less over time), one will converse naturally with the I-Butler. It will learn to anticipate your needs, ever evolving its involvement in your life according to: 1. Its knowledge base of you, your activities, and what’s important to you 2. The tradeoffs between your desire to delegate activities vs. retain control. (Example: will you have it answer e-mails for you? Which ones? Or will it just screen and prio

The form-factor of the displays on the smartphones are also going to change radically, forcing a change of the form-factor of the smartphone itself. I don't see any strong innovation in chinese smartphones so far which can be seen as such on global scale. Chinese smartphone vendors which are noticed outside of China are mainly noticed for: * Delivering same spec at lower price (because they are skipping large amounts of local quality assurance, distribution, warranty regulation, etc.) * Growing dramatically in quarterly sales (because they are catering more closely to the needs of the huge chinese domestic market, thus creating a bigger success in china than foreign brands.) But on the inside, those recognized products are still made of key components from Qualcomm, Samsung, LG, Sony. Companies which spend money also on technology R&D, not just product development... The next innovation in smartphones, ie: something that draws a solid line under the current generation of smartphones and enters a new generation, will be ones which have flexible/changing form factors. Flexible Form-Factors / Multiform: Gone will be the days when you could only buy a fixed-size device where everybody debated about whether a phablet was the best size or whether taller was better, or if smaller was better for calls and so on. You will simply buy a small device which can fold out / extend to become a larger device. Your phone will operate differently in each form factor as the device reconfigures it's UI for the new screen size. Screens are already invented which are flexible, roll up, extend in size and cleverly re-configure it's own resolution when folded. Basically what th

5G Phones 5G can be great from a low and high frequency perspective. T-Mobile owns the 600MHz 5G, which means it goes further than any cellular band, yet. Verizon is experimenting at cities with its mmwave technology (high frequency). While this mostly won’t be able to go further than than coffee shop you are in (if it’s nearby) your data rates will be blazing fast. Our chief tech officer in my mobile boosters company that retired joked that he might not have much use unless he wants to watch porn in 4k there in his coffee shop. Funny, but also strike a very real and honest note on the only uses of mmwave 5g. Fold Phones becoming big Google Pixel Fold tipped to launch later this year Google is expected to launch its Pixel 6 series on October 19 and has already provided an early look at the duo’s

I reckon when cellphone or smartphone technology merges with augmented reality things will change quite fundamentally. At the moment the phone is clunky, more or less contained within a single unit and needs to be shifted left, right and centre - pocket to hand to ear to pocket etc. The tech will start fixing. The smartwatch is an early advance but a good example of tech that utilises an existing device in a new context. Glasses will follow. Earpieces and headphones, microphones and other devices too. Basically the sort of stuff that is internal in robots will start appearing as external fashion around us.

Thanks for the A2A. innovations in the smartphone industry are moving faster than ever before in the history of smartphones. It’s just that the design and functionality of the phones have evolved to the point that most of that innovation is now focused on hardware, not form or user experience. For example, every generation of smartphones has faster processors, better cameras, and more efficient batteries. That requires innovation. I think you are probably looking for leaps in innovation that actually only occur every 7–10 years. For instance, the iPhone came out in 2007 and its form (screen with a home button) didn’t change much until the iPhone X was introduced in 2017 — ten years later. The next big leaps in smartphone innovation will come from breakthroughs in battery life. Imagine a phone

There are some cute answers out there already… At a more practical, I would love to see a nearly 20-year old feature restored: Palm had a magnetically held cordless charging feature for their phones. I loved it so much, I attached one to my dashboard. The magnet attraction was such that I never lost a phone. The bluetooth connection would synch up and the phone would be charging whenever I got into the car. Technologically, I would like to see screens/phones diminish in size. I want to carry the phone with me, but they are getting so bulky that “feature” is diminishing with every new generation. There is nothing wrong with a 3.5″ screen for reading/responding to text messages and most e-mail. The next great technological improvement made to smart phones will be the ultra fast bandwidth leap t

Technology has come a long way since. Today’s smartphones sport large touchscreen displays, impressive cameras, and high-tech features like 3D facial recognition. While phones were primarily used for making calls back in the day, now we use them for things like listening to music, browsing the web, playing games, and watching cat videos on YouTube. If you told me back in 1999 what these devices would be capable of in around 20 years, I’d call you crazy — and I wouldn’t be alone. Back then, no one could have predicted the impact phones would have on our lives. It would have sounded like science fiction. But the time is changed and technology is developing more rapidly now than ever. So, it's very hard to predict what features we can expect in the future in Smartphones, what will smartphones

The smartphone, however evolutionary it may seem when compared to the world's first mobile phone invented by Dr. Martin Cooper, can be classified as a new invention in and of itself. The world's first smartphone is the IBM Simon Personal Communicator released in 1992. Neil Papert invented 'text messaging' in 1992, as well. The world's first text message was “Merry Christmas”. In 1994, genius inventor André Gray invented Ringtones and Ringbacks along with the SYNC Programming Language--the world's very first downloadable third party mobile app for his IBM Simon. Once again, in 1998, Andre Gray Invented Microgrooves Electronic, or Microgrooves-E for short, the world's first multimedia player which was capable of playing single songs, entire albums, and can even show videos, albeit with very

Powering it was a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A processor and the phone also had a 3.15-megapixel camera. Even back in those days the phone shipped with apps like Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. 2. Motorola Cliq: This was the first Android phone built by Motorola and was launched in October 2009. It had a great design that consisted of a spacious keyboard and a tall 4.49-inch display. Well, for one, you have to consider that Google kind of dances to their own drummer. They’re not in the same league as Samsung (#1 and nearly 1/4 of earth’s whole smartphone market) or Apple (10.2% global market share at #3… sort of). There is also Huawei, Xiaomi, and BBK Electronics (OPPO, vivo, and One Plus brands) rounding out the top five companies in the smartphone business. It’s also useful to ask, what, exactly, is innovation. Samsung put a whole P&S camera into a phone… twice. This is the Galaxy Zoom K, with an actual 10:1 optical zoom. It didn’t go over well… people pretty much want this pocket computer we still call “phone” to be a proper pocket computer. Not a big fat pocket computer + camera. On the other hand, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note in 2011. At the time, it was a gi

At the same time the body being pragmatically small enough to hold in and use with one hand. 3. A camera capable of atleast 720p video recording. And one which has a good iso rating and can focus well. 4. A loud enough speaker. 5. Waterproof.!!! 6. At least 2gb RAM. 7. A good processor + gpu configuration . 8. Sturdy form. Being able to handle falls without a back cover. 9. Standard connectivity options & ports. 10. Able to support portable HDD acess using the micro usb. 11. Bulletproof back! It's the latest fad in smartphone market. 12. Good internal mic for recording. 13. Stable Os with consistent updates. 14. Enviable design. 15. Wireless charging as well fast charging. 16. There are many innovations in the works. Some are out there now or near release. There are phones with infrared cameras included. Waterproof models are available. In the pipeline is an air quality sensor that will give you data on your local air quality and may save lives if the sensor picks up a rise in CO or SO2. Cameras have been rising in quality to the point where they may be closing the gap on some DSLR's. If you are using apple as the innovation measure, then you will see a lag. The new tech gadgets are typically starting with android models. Why? There is a lot of competition between mfg. Since Apple has no competitors in their platform, they just plod along and wait to see how new gadgets fare on the droids.

Hi In this answer, I'm going to share my predictions for trends in 2019. All of them are unconfirmed. * Punch hole/infinity O This is a type of display that may come to the Samsung Galaxy s10. This is a bezel less display without the notch and the sliding cameras but it will have a small circle in between the day for selfie camera. * No notch anymore The notch trends will come to an end * Many phones with Snapdragon 855 Some leakes suggest that Snapdragon will soon launch a new processor banned 855. And this Will be in phones like the POCO F2, OnePlus 7 etc… * More phones without finger print scanner and head phone jack The finer print jack will be replaced by iris scanner or Face identification while the headphone jack will be replaced by USB C Port. This Will ultimate increase earphones and headphones w

A2A The most of answer refer to touch screen functionality are in fact incorrect. Digital Camera using touch screen interface predates smartphone or phone camera for that matter by several years. Camera like these featuring touch interface were already released by number of manufacture by 2001–2002, and by the time iPhone came around, touch user interface were common place. This i700 was actually ahead of time in many regard, so you could look it up what it tried to offer with limited technology available back the. This camera released in early digital camera era had MSRP of around $1500. Time had changed lot since 2001. So, correct order of technology moving are more from Point&Shoot to Entry level DSLR For Minolta, Alpha7 digital camera released in 2004 for example already had touch panel. So,

[This is a larger question, that touches on the historical abuse of modal UI for error handling. I am adding more to the list, with the above context] 1. Submit button in login On login screens, when received incorrect password, the UI controls shake and settle quickly. You can see this behavior in MAC, Ubuntu etc. This feedback is pretty effective and is far better than traditional methods. 2. Password strength indicator, in signup screens When choosing password, there are real-time feedback indicator to show the strength of password chosen by the user. If the password is too weak, it would be treated as an error or a warning by the system. Eg. Dropbox signup screen (from their website): 3. Like Scotty said, “all I can say is they don’t make them like they used to”. Back in 2007 when most phones were feature phones, so to stand out you needed to dress to impress. In order to sell their phones companies had to make a phone that looked good. Take a look at the phone below launched by Motorola during feature phones era - Wow! that looks magnificent. And now companies have begun to follow that era’s trend, but it’s still a along way to go as performance is the main focus for both the companies and the consumers.

Since the smartphones have become pretty much boring right now. They have very less new things to offer rather than a fast processor or a better camera. Smartphones are losing the charm. The smartphone you are using right now or will use after one year will mostly have the same features , unless you upgrade from a Nokia 1100 So the two next big things will be - 1.Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Every year, automobile manufactures spend millions in funding development of cutting edge technologies to keep drivers safe and accident free while operating their vehicles. These technologies are known in the industry as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and each one is controlled by complex real-time embedded systems. I’d would say these 2 phones (instead of 1) are the most innovative phones of the year as they checks all boxes 1. OnePlus 7 Pro - It’s got all the latest tech on all aspects (Higher refresh rate curved AMOLED with no notch, pop up camera, in display fingerprint sensor, clean android experience with UI that’s been crafted to be smooth, excellent camera tech, latest 855 chip, value for money) and it also got released on the early side of 2019 (before most who copied). So, I would say it’s the most innovative smartphone of the year. 2. Note 10+ - It’s got one of the most powerful processors (next to Apple’s), great camera with World’s highest DxOMark of 113 for rear cameras and 99 for front camera, best display ever in terms of view-ability (but no fast refresh rate), 3D depth sensing advanced came

Plenty of software engineers from the 1980s microcomputer revolution went on to be part of the 2000s smartphone revolution. They aren’t. They’re just focusing on marketing them to us all because most people today buy their phones based on whichever has the more impressive camera specs. it’s rare that any hype gets generated around other performance characteristics, like their screens or their chips. If you look at most current phones, you don’t see much of an actual camera hump. But you do probably do see a bit of a bezel around the camera section. If you look closely, you’ll note that the lens of the camera isn’t actually something you can touch. There’s a bit of protective glass in front of the lens, and that aforementioned bezel surrounds the glass. I just looked over at my phone, here on my desk, and as usual, it’s lying on its back so I can see the screen if I get a call. If not for the protective bezel around that lens area, that protective glass would likely get scratched. That’s why you rarely see a fully flush camera. But there are also the forces of physics at work here. If you find yourself fighting physics, you have already lost. And phone camera makers have a physics proble

Thanks for A2A. Cameras and photography are a huge part of modern smartphones, especially flagship devices and even all the budget devices. A number of the them take an interest in photography as a hobby and others, like myself, take an interest simply in how advanced the technology can become. Over the past few years we’ve already taken a look back at the introduction of camera phones and how imaging technology has been central to the growth of the smartphone industry. Few companies that innovated features in Camera's are: Samsung Qiku(Newly launched) Nokia Sony Apple Two things have been clearly understood by the smartphone makers and that are * Bigger isn't always better * It's More than just megapixels Now let's talk about what different companies have done in the recent past. * 1)Qiku- It

No, as a techie, I am more than pleased to inform you that you are wrong. People claim that smartphones can’t get any better or they are all the same. True that all the phones do look similar and here’s smartphone innovation hasn’t slowed down. Their is a lot of innovation going on in the smartphone industry and I honestly cannot tell you how excited I feel as a tech geek. There is a lot of a innovation going on right now in the industry and let me tell you a few of them bud. 1. Retractable Camera Lens - A few weeks back, Xiaomi teased a smartphone on Twitter which had a retractable camera lens (like a digital camera). As of now, every new smartphone has at least 3 cameras with every camera having a different focus distances, there’s a telephoto to get close, a wide angle to capture a wider f

Let’s see, it appears your question is that there are no real breakthroughs that appeal to you. Of course, that is your opinion and right for you. However, we have seen major innovations in new smartphones year on year and this new year no less if not more than any other. This year we saw of course the major improvement in processors that run these devices. Overall performance capability improved more than 30% on average. Did you see that in your car, your clothes, your furniture, or other products or services you use? Some perhaps, but not most. This also allowed major improvements in displays. Some new devices are running at twice the old refresh rates and high resolution allowing both better pictures and better rendering for a better game or VR experience for example. Better cameras and s

Not really. It’s a very good smartphone no doubt, but many of these features aren’t really new or innovative. Animojis have a lot of potential and could end up being the next big thing, but wireless charging, facial recognition, really thin bezels (even one other phone with a protrusion at the top) have been done before. It will be interesting to see what AR features are available, but that’s not really new either, just more mainstream than it’s been.

The lifetime of a smartphone is not very long, due to advances in new features. So most people will be tempted to buy a fresh new one, esp. when you are on contract with providers, it can be achieved without burning a hole in your pocket. More memory, faster processor, more sensors, larger screen and such will make people to reach out for better phones. Incremental hardware improvements, esp. longer lasting battery and power sipping processors, esp new developments in screen technology etc would be what is important in the future. As far as innovation in phones are concerned, I feel that it would come in the form of apps, how health and fitness is one major aspect of a phone, and I think complementing the phone with a watch is definitely the right direction things would take. Q: Can Chinese smartphone companies like Huawei replace Apple's brand value and innovation, considering they copy many features of iPhones? A: No * No matter how much coign the Chinese companies do, they can never reach the quality, reliability, dependability, usability and value of Apple’s products * We know this because we have watched the Chinese marled closely for over 30 years and essentially the coign techniques that the Chinese companies use are completely superficial, so even if they follow a few consumers into buying them, eventually the users spread the word that the Chinese copies and counterfeits are no good * The problem is that copycats are not innovators at all, so they might try to assemble something that has appealing specs or glamorous looks, in the end, they just don't work anywh

A smartphone is NOT a huge innovation. It is really nothing more than a personal computer that they have managed to reduce in size to a point where everyone can carry one. They could continue to get smaller but are limited by our ability to easily interface with them. The next big innovation will probably come in medicine. We are learning to cure more cancers. If we could develop a medication that could effectively allow our blood to flow and not clog up, heart attacks and strokes would greatly reduce and we would lead longer lives. WE might also further innovate transportation to the point that ICE vehicles are totally replaced by electric ones. We will need better battery tech and the ability to generate more clean power.

It depends on your display type. There are 2 types of displays used in smartphones these days: OLED and LCD. LCD panels don’t benefit from dark mode at all. Palm TREO was big along with several Blackberry and Windows Mobil devices and even Samsung had a similar offering , the Blackjack . Apple came out with an all inclosed smartphone with one button were all the others had keyboards . It was laughed at and ridiculed as the thought of what a smartphone was has already been established . It was true in what we thought as a smartphone both in design , function , and complexity far , really far out performed what the iPhone offered . Believe whatever you need to get you through the night, but tomorrow you will still get only what you pay for. Expecting DSLR results from a tiny sensor with shitty optics is the very reason that smartphones have computational photography in the first place. They’re compensating for things like chromatic aberrations which lens distortion that are typically overcome by complex lens designs. Making a tiny sensor as sensitive to light as a larger one defies logic. Personally I’m delighted so many people expect professional results from their smartphones. Here are a few reasons they’re consistently disappointed, and why professional photographers still have a place. Linux is heavily based on Unix JAVA is based on earlier language XML borrowed from earlier Mark up language The concept of a smart phone can be credited to Steve Jobs , but borrowed from BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. As of 2019, the foldable smartphone remains an incremental innovation. Devices like the Huawei Mate X (below, courtesy Android Authority), and the Samsung Galaxy Fold essentially don’t do anything very new with the smartphone’s current form factor. Essentially, the form factor isn’t new. We have seen flip-phones with a similar value proposition in the past, the most notable of them being the Moto Razr. And the Razr probably isn’t even the first flip form factor phone - with other phones laying claim to that distinction. Let’s remember however, that something doesn’t have to be absolutely new to add value. Old ideas can be resurrected at different times and still stay relevant. As it is with life, so it is with design. I hope that smaller form factor phones become more common, through foldab

Several reasons. As I am almost done with the final week. I would talk about it one by one. Firstly, HTC is also a Chinese brand. Why it failed? 3 points. 1. They lack of core technology, they do not have Hi-silicon Soc, they have no control power to the parts market. They were famous only because they took the first-mover advantage during the initial period of Android. People buy it just like IBM ThinkPad (The first vendor of Intel+Microsoft combination). And their products were not bad. However, as other brand catch up and also join Android camp. Their good period finished. 2. Problematic Marketing and product position. Before 2012, HTC used Machine Sea strategies. Launched many different machines to satisfy the market. And in 2012, they noticed this was not a sustainable method, then, they swit

Yes. When it comes to innovation, Apple is largely a non-player. On the smartphone front, they tend to mimic features and trends of other smartphone makers, and on the desktop and laptop front, they really are not any different from HP or dell. They use off the shelf Intel, AMD, Samsung, etc parts, and place them in a custom chassis. Plus, Apple’s rep has been in general decline on the services front. They are arguably one of the core reasons why the right to repair movement exists. They have gained an infamous reputation for quoting customers much higher prices then what it actually takes other’s to do the same repair. Go watch Louis Rossmann for some common cases.

Giant leaps in technology are rare. Most changes will be incremental - lithium batteries already have 3 to 10 times the capacity than when they first entered the market. Some of the other very promising technology that already exists may start to surpass lithium, or lithium may continue to get much better. But it's unlikely we'll suddenly see a battery with twice the energy. Because the changes are not big jumps, technology like new cell phones just erase those changes by using thinner batteries or higher power features. They simply follow the status quo: cell phones should last one day because people charge them overnight…. or: nobody likes to carry a heavy laptop, so they dillute the battery gains by making the laptop lighter.

Q: Will Apple no longer become the number one smartphone in America as other manufacturers are taking the lead in innovative smartphones with better value? A: Apple is the number one smartphone manufacturer around the world, when you realize that 98% of all worldwide smartphone profits is earned by Apple. That is not going to change for an extremely long time, if ever. Appel delivers the very best smartphone value when you understand what it is that you really get with your iPhone, as an example: today’s iPhone 11 is 3 times faster than any and all Android phones, bar none, yet it only costs $699. When you compare that to the premium Samsung Galaxy Fold which costs $1,980 USD and the Huawei Fold which costs $3,500 USD then you can see that the iPhone delivers the very best value in the world

Less radical innovation, I think you need to look a little harder than the flashing lights and loud music from others. Apple has innovation in many areas that hasn't stopped or slowed down. The smartphone market has ( as everyone has said and predicted ) slowed down and has been for the last couple of years. It isn't Apple’s fault nor any others. It is because of saturation. When China and India markets were opened to them and others it was a boom to an already saturated markets in the west. Now that those have been tapped there isn't a huge market to tap into again. Once everyone has a smartphone what do you do now to keep them buying your product amongst all the competition ? The home PC saw this in the early 2000–2010 era. The mid to late 90s and early 2000s were a boom for them with a

Well, I wouldn’t say they lack innovation, I think they do that intentionally for consistency in interface design and to keep it simple and easy to use. A lot of people who aren't very tech-savvy like that Samsung maintains their design throughout their phones in the same range. Also, they have phones in soo many price ranges, that they want to offer something different in each range (especially their premium offerings). This might also be a reason why they don’t give too many features in their mid-range phones.

For example, if you are assuming that a Samsung Smartphone from Verizon only costs a penny, because that's what the website says you have to pay if you sign up with them... that's not the cost of the phone. The cost of the phone is worked into the contract you have to pay. So.... if you look at a company like T-Mobile, they make you pay for the phone. A Samsung Galaxy Note 4, for example, is $750. Now that we have a concrete number... are you saying that you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is underpriced at $750? What relatively dumb digital camera costs $750? No. Not quickly, or not completely. Apple follows what most people call, “The last mover Advantage”. It refines and builds upon a tech and then only releases it in the market. But yes, no one thought that companies like Nokia and Blackberry would be extinct or close to be extinct in the SmartPhone industy. But it happened. Apple does introduce new things, but only once it has perfected it. If it doesn’t make an impressive enough device, sales will go down. I suspect that the innovation would be split between them rather than all of it being in one company but eventually one of them will rise to the top. I don’t know which one. I have seen some interesting things from each company but nothing as impressive as Huawei. Update: Comments from Xie Wei It looks like Apple would probably take sales for people that want the top of the market. Sure it has. Very much so. Smartphones have not only advanced photographic technology but also have strongly disrupted the dedicated camera markets. Some camera classes have completely disappeared, some have suffered heavy sales loss. Smartphones have created a new sort of photography called “computational photography”. It’s because of the on-the-fly processing (or real-time-filters). These features are consumer oriented and focused on image enhancement. However, very few achievements from smartphone cameras are implemented in dedicated cameras. Dedicated cameras become less consumer oriented, they are tailored for photography enthusiasts and pro-photographers. So we have two distinctively different camera classes: the consumer oriented smartphones and the prosumer oriented dedicated cameras.

You just have to look at the different business model between Apple and other manufacturers. Apple’s business model is to provide the best user experience they can. They do this by controlling both the hardware, software and support. When they market their product they show what you can do not what the phone has. Companies basing their phones on Android can’t compete on any of those. They compete against the other manufacturers using the same core OS (Android) so they behave the same. They could compete on support but that takes years to develop a solid reputation and only a short time to destroy it. Instead they compete on the two things left. Price and hardware. Price is obvious and is why there is so little profit for the Android manufacturers. To compete with hardware you simply add any
