Following WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the MCU's second original series available on Disney +. Here's our review on the new Marvel movie and a recap of everything you need to know about it.

In addition to all the useful information about it, here you'll find our review of the latest Marvel Original Creation from the Streaming Platform's Catalog (SVoD).

It was supposed to be the first Marvel fiction to be uploaded to Disney + but Falcon and the Winter Soldier was finally overtaken by the very good WandaVision.

Whatever, better late than never for the two sidekicks of Captain America. And as WandaVision has set the bar high, our expectations are high for the new adventures of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Here's everything you need to know about the new series launching on March 19, 2021.

Warning, this article contains spoilers for the Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame movies.

Our review of the first episode

The first episode of the adventures of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes does not disappoint: simple, but very effective, it gives hope for great things for the future.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers entrusts his Captain America shield to the Falcon. His wish ? May his friend make the legendary artifact his own and become America's new icon. Unfortunately, this succession is not that simple.

The country may need "new heroes", but it does not yet feel like it is taking up the torch. When you've been a "secondary" hero all of your existence, it's hard to suddenly pass from the shadows to the light.

Bucky Barnes' life is not a long quiet river, either. Loneliness, all-out nightmares, identity crisis ... Steve Rogers' historical companion does not know where he is. He wants to repent and make good the mistakes of the past as best he can, but it is not that simple.

From the start, we feel that the two men need a new start, a common vocation that would help them enter another dimension. Perhaps the appearance of a new enemy - the Flag Smashers - could be the trigger.

The originality of the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier is also to present its heroes in a new light. To illustrate their struggle, the serie shows them on a daily basis, with their families or friends. Bucky goes to the psychologist, has lunch with a friend, and goes out with a girl he likes. Sam Wilson has to deal with family issues.

Seeing him in such "mundane" situations, like any other citizen, ultimately works very well. This change of register (probably punctual) gives a unique identity to Falcon and the Winter Soldier and shows its protagonists in a new light. They do their introspection, search for meaning and strive to find the way forward.

The show is not lacking in action either. Its spectacular side is clearly visible from the first minutes and also suggests good things for the future. She also succeeds in giving new interest to two eternal second knives. It's very positive and if the sequel lives up to this first episode, Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be a very good series.

When did Falcon and the Winter Soldier air?

The first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired on March 19, 2021 on Disney +, two weeks after WandaVision ended. A new Marvel show therefore replaces another on the streaming platform (SVoD).

Originally scheduled for August 2020, the series saw its production halt in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming then resumed in September of the same year.

How many episodes for season 1?

Six episodes of 40-50 minutes each are planned for Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

It's a "mini-series", like WandaVision. We should therefore not expect a second season, even if nothing is certain yet.

What is Falcon and the Winter Soldier about?
The series follows the adventures of Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), two well-known members of the Avengers.

The Disney + synopsis:

"After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson the Falcon and Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier decide to join forces on an adventure that will eventually test the limits of their powers - and their patience."

Falcon and the Winter Soldier therefore takes place in the wake of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers hung up the Captain America costume after reuniting with the love of his life, Peggy Carter, in the past.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve gives his vibranium shield to his friend Sam Wilson. In a first teaser, Sam is also seen training with the mythical artifact.

It should also be remembered that Sam and Bucky both were "erased" after the snap of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Our two heroes are therefore presumed dead for five years ...

Analysis, theories and rumors

Anthony Mackie explained during his time with James Corden that he was not sure he would become the next Captain America, which is however the most popular theory among fans. "If you watch Endgame, at the end of the movie Sam Wilson never accepts the shield, he explains. He even tells Cap that the shield is his."

Something to sow doubt. But we must not forget that a new Marvel toy has leaked representing Sam Wilson with the Captain America costume… Is this a bluff from Anthony Mackie to preserve the mystery a little further?

A new character is also complicating things. The trailer features John Walker, known in the comics as the anti-hero and sometimes antagonist, U.S. Agent.

The US government wouldn't be very happy if Steve left his shield to Sam, preferring John Walker to him. In the comics, Walker momentarily becomes the new Captain America. Will he compete with Sam on the show?

According to several rumors, the character of Isaih Bradley, played by Carl Lumbly, should also be in the game. In the comics, he is known as the black Captain America, a super-soldier who participated in government experiments as Steve Rogers. Her grandson, Eli Bradley, a member of the Young Avengers, is also expected to be introduced to the show.

As for Bucky Barnes, he will find a familiar face that tortured him in Captain America: Civil War: Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl). Fans of the comics should be happy: the infamous villain will be wearing his classic purple mask. As for his role in the series, we do not know more.

Sharon Carter, Peggy Carter's niece, is also back. Recall that at the end of Civil War, Sharon becomes a fugitive after helping Steve Rogers and his teammates. The show should tell us what Sharon has done since she came to the wrong side of the law.

Last familiar face to be found in Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Don Cheadle has announced that War Machine is also making an appearance.

Who is in charge?
Malcolm Spellman is the showrunner and lead writer for Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He is particularly known for his work on the Empire series for which he was a screenwriter and producer.

Behind the camera, we find Kari Skogland who will direct the six episodes. She has already proven herself working on The Handmaid's Tale, Vikings, The Walking Dead and has even already tested the Marvel universe by making an episode of The Punisher for Netflix.

In an interview with TV Line, Malcolm Spellman said he drew heavily on the work of Ryan Cogler and Chadwick Boseman on Black Panther to build his series.

The cast of Falcon and the Winter Soldier

  • Anthony Mackie, alias Sam Wilson / Falcon
  • Sebastian Stan, alias Bucky Barnes / Soldat d'Hiver
  • Emily VanCamp, alias Sharon Carter
  • Daniel Brühl, alias Helmut Zemo
  • Wyatt Russell, alias John Walker

Trailers and teasers

The first trailer of December 11, 2020 shows that the series falls without the lineage of "classic" Marvel productions, unlike WandaVision.

To put it simply, the styling is clearly reminiscent of an action movie and there is no change in tone or register. Sam and Bucky seem to travel the world to complete their superhero missions.

We can see their new enemies: The Flag Smashers. Actress Erin Kellyman, whose character remains unknown, is said to be one of them. This masked group seems to be causing chaos everywhere it goes.

The trailer opens with Sam Wilson looking at Captain America's shield and stating, "The story of this shield is complicated." The series' musical composer, Henry Jackman, explained in an interview with FilmSpeak that she will be dealing with complex and serious topics never before discussed in the Marvel Universe.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier should explore the African-American community's connection to the Captain America figure and what he means to them. It is therefore not certain that Sam will reprise the role of his friend Steve Rogers.

A second preview of the series has since been posted. It is in line with the first and does not reveal any other surprise. The pace is brisk, the reverse would have been surprising, but the video above all introduces the character of Sharon Carter.

Who is it ? None other than the great-niece of Peggy Carter, the great love of Captain America. The scene in question is quite funny since the latter is forced to mother the two superheroes who seem to have some difficulty working together ... or rather to choose who will be the next Captain America?

This trailer, which aired during the last Super Bowl, has been viewed over 125 million times in 24 hours according to Deadline. A record figure that makes her the most watched video preview for a Disney series intended for streaming.

The launch of the show is approaching and Disney multiplies the teasers. Called "Coworkers", some are condensed (30 seconds and 1 minute). They announce a series rich in action and twists.

The latest trailers, as we expected, the adventures of the superheroic duo will be in line with the latest Marvel blockbusters. Falcon and the Winter Soldier should therefore be less surprising than WandaVision. At least she won't break the codes the same way.

As one would expect, the questions around Captain America and his succession are very present. Falcon has regained custody of the mythical shield made of an alloy of steel and vibranium, but he still doesn't seem to really manage to make it his own.
