I've had a subscription to a meal delivery service for about two years. I use it regularly, and I've never had a problem. Last month, I needed to cancel my subscription because I was moving to a new apartment in Boston. I went to the website, clicked on the cancellation link, and was directed to an AI customer service bot. I thought it would be simple. I had heard horror stories about customer service bots, but I thought this would be different. I was wrong. I said 'I want to cancel my subscription.' The bot asked for my account number. I gave it. The bot asked for my reason. I said 'moving.' The bot said 'I understand. Let me transfer you to a human.' I was transferred to another bot. That bot asked for my account number again. I gave it again. The bot asked for my reason again. I said 'moving' again. The bot said 'I understand. Let me transfer you to a human.' I was transferred back to the first bot. I was stuck in a loop. It was like Groundhog Day, but with customer service. I spent 6 hours on this loop. I tried every trick — saying 'representative,' 'human,' 'supervisor,' pressing 0 repeatedly. Nothing worked. The AI was designed to keep me from reaching anyone. I eventually hung up in frustration. I tried again the next day. The same thing happened. I tried using the chat feature on the website. I got a different AI bot. It asked me the same questions. It sent me in the same loop. I was losing my mind. I was so frustrated that I started screaming at the phone. My roommate thought I had gone crazy. I had to cancel my credit card to stop the subscription. The AI won. I'm still furious about it. The company says the AI is 'constantly improving' but I haven't seen any improvement. I've considered filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I've even considered taking them to small claims court. It's not about the money anymore. It's about the principle. I shouldn't have to cancel my credit card just to stop a subscription. I use Amazon's customer service instead now — they actually have humans. I've read about ChatGPT outperforming doctors and how AI is replacing human interactions. I didn't realize it would replace my ability to cancel a subscription. Has anyone actually gotten through to a human on the first try? I'm convinced it's a myth. I'm so traumatized by this experience that I'm hesitant to sign up for any subscription service ever again. I'd rather pay full price than deal with an AI bot.
