There are literally thousands of prevalent conceptions for mental illness, which is undoubted because of lack of awareness. According to news published by World Health Organization, about 264 million people globally encounter Depression. Still, people tend to hesitate to talk about it due to the constant fear of being judged and whatnot!!

In this article, we would some of the established myths regarding Mental Illness, and Depression, to be more specific.

1) MYTH: Depression isn’t real. It’s all ILLUSIONAL and FALSE.

TRUTH: It is unbelievably sad how people confirm that a person’s Depression is not real; instead, it is just a state of sadness, or worse, is nothing more than their thought. They often advise the person to forget or try to distract themselves by keeping them busy with their works!!

It is a severe condition that shouldn’t be normalized by such myths. It might help a person going through minimal sorrow or dejection, but for an extreme state as Depression, distraction won’t help but only add to a person’s misery. Seek professional help because it is REAL!!

2) MYTH: Men can never be depressed.

TRUTH: “Men don’t cry” stereotype has made it all worse, and Depression doesn’t acknowledge gender, age group, profession, or any other factor. The fact is that females are more open about their emotions, and hence they can quickly diagnose any sign of Depression in them. Contrarily, men tend to hesitate to open up, so not sharing their problems makes it worse for them.

3) MYTH: Hang out with friends and don’t be too emotional over your problems.

TRUTH: While the tip could cheer you up if you feel low or upset, but is inefficient for the person dealing with Depression. A depressed person lacks the willingness to mingle or to do any sort of task, not even the works they used to like doing once. Secondly, being depressed isn’t one’s choice. A sensitive person or a less emotional person both have an equal chance of getting depressed!!

4) MYTH: Seeking out any medical/professional help would make it a life-long issue.

TRUTH: Getting it diagnosed and starting medications, therapy, and counseling are the best ways to improve your mental state. The medication period may vary, depending upon the best suitable treatment and the stage of Depression one is going through.

Once again, please understand the importance of you and your mental health. Do not hesitate to share how you feel just because of the fear of being judged or mocked. It’s always YOU who should be essential for yourself too, and that only should be your forever priority!

How do you heal from depression?

Mahen Ya·November 7, 2019 Former depressiveOriginal answer:

How did you treat your depression?

Hello !

First of all, to see if you recognize yourself, the psychiatrists diagnosed me with generalized anxiety and then it turns out to be depression.

2 years of "descent" where the emotions hurt more and more.

1 year of medical wandering. Examinations of all kinds for physical symptoms.

2 years of care, psychotherapy as well as antidepressants (paroxetine 20mg once a day.)

I am in the process of stopping AD because it is too restrictive in terms of side effects.

So much for the experience, now, how I was able to go up the slope, it is above all a work on oneself in my case as well as psychotherapy ...

I realized at several stages of therapy that I was lying to myself about reactions to such and such an event. In addition, I did not know at all how to identify my emotions and therefore understand how I reacted to a situation.

I feel like I was a kid in terms of emotional intelligence and self-confidence.

Once awareness, the work bears fruit little by little and morale rises, emotions are no longer painful, and we rebuild ourselves.

It's succinct, but I can detail it if you wish! Do not hesitate to come and talk to people who are caring. (With a similar experience or not, in any case, if they are benevolent, they will help you open up to others and that can help!)13.3k  viewsShow 58  positive votesShow shares58118

Why are we depressed?

Dimitri Executioner·January 12, 2019 Dev JS ( 2018 - present )The factors seem to me to be numerous. I would love to read a psychologist's response, but I can give my opinion. I think of Reason's model: I imagine depression to be a series of bad events, more or less important. I don't believe that being depressed is being sad for a long time, from what I could read (because it is a subject that I had to work on) it is rather a physical state, specific to chemistry of our brain. Hence the fact that drugs have an important role for some people: it is a real disease. I think you have to dare to meet a psychologist, because he knows the brain and the complex logics of feelings and emotional states. I think you have to do everything not to forget yourself, to no longer take care of yourself. As i say(more)

What got you out of depression?

Profile picture for Frank Han

Frank han· July 21, 2019 Works at University of Illinois Chicago ( 2020 - present )Original answer: What helped you get out of a state of great depression?

I had depression during my 1st year of PCEM (Undergraduate Medicine), but today I feel very happy because I understand the ephemeral and the beauty of life. I had my share of grief - there was the death in my family, there was the breakup, there was the loss of friends, the loss of a few pediatric patients to cancer / severe heart disease / dying at home, despite my team's best efforts at the hospital. The most powerful message I have ever heard about depression was how small we are in the universe. I invite you to see the entire solar system (sorry, Pluto!) Remember that at this scale we are microscopic. We are just floating through the universe. Everything has a finite life. Our lives are unfortunately too transitory. I was sorry, but at the end of each night there is a sunrise. I had to tell families why their baby hadn't spent the night at my job (luckily this was a rare occurrence). But life doesn't stop throwing curved balls. Everyone received them.

Even the sun will disappear one day and the Earth will be reduced to ashes. It gives me the urgency to live all the experiences of life. It encourages me not to waste more than a fraction of my time in grief. It makes me realize how important it is to achieve victory for humanity. I enrolled in pediatrics to make a difference in the lives of young children - and I live for the five-year-olds who leave the hospital, in better shape than when they entered. My job is not really a job, because I can share the joy of the chubby baby coming home drinking milk after his heart surgery. It encourages me to do things like fly through the Northern Lights (initially thought I was abducted by aliens, but I realized it was the Northern Lights haha). It led me to experience the joy and excitement of Irish dancing - after which I realized that I had been living under a rock for 20 years. This year in 2012, I knew what the warmth of the real sun looked like when I flew into the dance studio to perform these dance moves. It encourages me to do my best, to make it a good story when it's time to write my story. It is precisely because I am grateful for all my blessings that I play the guitar, play in astronomy and play rustic Swiss folk songs on the accordion. It is precisely because I am grateful for all of my blessings that I adore the antics of the orc whales.1.5k  viewsShow 9  positive votes9

Why is overkindness often leading to depression?

Profile picture for Gaël Devananda Brajeul

Gaël Devananda Brajeul·December 31, 2018 Meditation Practitioner at La Méditation Guidée ( 2014 - present )Thank you Johan for submitting this question to me. When kindness is excessive, it cannot be sincere, because it is turned towards oneself. It induces an awkward attitude from not actually being present to what is happening, but rather diverting it to use it as a pretext. It is a way of forcing to be loved, by asking the other not to hurt, and produces the opposite effect than the one desired, as often when the relationship is biased by a particular expectation. This behavior instantly generates a dominant / dominated relationship, which can quickly be very unpleasant for the interlocutor, because it requires a lot of patience. The easiest way to get out of it quickly is to become obnoxious, a natural, radical defense. J(more)

Is Depression a Disease of Rich Countries?

Profile picture for David Derrington

David Derrington·Updated on September 3, 2017I saw one

No.

Let's look at the ranking of the countries that take the most antidepressants in the world according to the OECD report:

1) Iceland
2) Australia
3) Portugal
4) Canada
5) Sweden
6) Great Britain
7) Denmark
8) New Zealand
9) Belgium
10) Finland

source: These are the countries that consume the most antidepressants

This classification, made up entirely of rich countries, leads us to think that rich countries are the most depressed because of their heavy consumption of antidepressants.

However, to rely on this classification would be a big mistake since the consumption of antidepressants is also linked to the standard of living of a country. Such a ranking does not reflect the level of depression in countries without 'democratized' access to antidepressants.

This is why we should prefer an index reflecting the level of depression in both the 'poor' and the 'rich'.

What could be better than the top 10 countries with the highest suicide rate in the world? Because a priori if we commit suicide it is because we do not have the joy of living. Moreover, committing suicide does not require a high standard of living (although that makes things easier).

List of countries by suicide rate - Wikipedia WHO organization ranking

1 Sri Lanka
2 Guyana
3 Mongolia
4 Kazakhstan
5 Côte d'Ivoire
6 Suriname
7 Equatorial Guinea
8 Lithuania
9 Angola
10 South Korea

I think we can agree that the countries of the Top 10 suicides are not known for their wealth with the exception of South Korea and Lithuania.

I conclude that the prejudice that depression is a disease of the rich is explained by the fact that the rich have few problems, therefore these problems have increased visibility. While in poor countries where there are a myriad of problems, certain problems (depression) are quickly forgotten in favor of problems presenting a question of life or death (war, epidemic of fatal disease, being hungry, thirsty, having a roof).

Take the example of Angola, in ninth position in the sad ranking cited above. This country torn apart by a civil war that lasted almost 30 years (1975–2002) is still in the process of rebuilding itself. It is understandable that the depression, as sad as it is, is not on the agenda of the immediate problems to be solved in Angola.6.3k  viewsShow 78  positive votes775

What do you think depression is?

Carl Gustav·November 3, 2019 DoctorOriginal answer: What is depression?

You are certainly talking about mood depression and not about the great economic depression or the weather depression.

In fact, they all have in common that they cause damage and be violent.

The depressive mood is a world, a continent, a tunnel or you sink more or less abruptly when light is absent and the very long time. The anticipation with the projects disappears and so do the experiences of pleasure. Mental strength and craving vanish, like libido. Sadness is overwhelming and we see the negative everywhere. It is above all a progressive conditioning, like an infernal circle or a well where one falls while having more and more difficulty to get up.

What is the correlation between depression and intelligence, if at all?

Profile picture for Richard Trigaux (Yichard Muni)

Richard Trigaux (Yichard Muni)·Dec. 26, 2017 Nine years with a sociopath

Depression is a feeling, not an illness or a psychiatric disorder. If the depression persists, it is because the cause of this feeling persists: loneliness, life in an absurd society, sad music, bullying, manipulation, stress, feeling of not being adequate, etc.

We should not be fooled that depression produces physical symptoms: anger produces much more, but it is considered a rewarding feeling, so it is not referred to as an illness. Of course, treating the symptoms does not solve the problems that cause them, because they are external to the person. In practice, accusations of mental illness will be an additional factor increasing the case. Especially someone who is in such pain that they want to kill themselves will keep it to themselves, instead of asking for help. Which of course increases the risk of taking action. Trying to “de-dramatize” while denying the causes also appears as an additional humiliation.

A depressed person needs energy, not self-deprecation.

The causes of depression being external to the person, intelligence is not taken into account. However, an intelligent person will more easily see the problems, or be more easily the target of mockery and bullying. Indeed, idiots and sociopaths see that there is something they cannot comprehend, so they try to destroy the intelligent person.2.8k  viewsShow 11  positive votes116

How do you deal with your depression on your own?

Profile picture for Anonymous

AnonymousDec. 26, 2018

With difficulty. Limping, staggering, clinging to the branches with the grace of an old forgotten bag.

Since I was a child I have been melancholy, sad, depressed. Since I was a child I have been convinced that I will never be able to succeed in my life, to be happy. I don't know why I always had this feeling, it's like that.

So I don't let myself down, I try to fight. For my girlfriend, who saves me with her presence and her love, for my family, for whom everything is not always very rosy.

So I try to move forward, but everything is complicated, and then sometimes you wonder if you know how to operate differently. I take time to do everything, I went back to school, it took me a while to just really want to. I started by doing them quite brilliantly, it's true, and then I cracked, too much internal pressure, I don't know how to function, I sabotage myself, maybe. Maybe living scares me, that I take pleasure in my depression, in melancholy, black companion but never surprising, never confusing, never surprising. I'm really struggling, I have a feeling, but time goes by and it's getting harder and harder to look pretty much functional.

I am sometimes told that I look a little sad, and it pains me, because sometimes I am not sad, but I am afraid to look like it. We feel stupid, losing energy for trivial things. Watch the clock ticking, time passing.

Time is an obsession. It passes, it takes, I like to look for the past. On Google Map, I look at a place with Streetview, and I compare with the oldest photos (around 2008 often). It literally fascinates me. Time passing, things moving, and me watching things moving, time passing.

How do you get over depression without someone's help?

Marine Lefebvre·Aug 6, 2018 Studied Psychology at School of Practical Psychologists ( Diploma obtained in 1990 )Depression is basically a “loss of meaning” of Life. It is not a question of depression but of real depression, in any case, that is what I take from the question. I always read the questions carefully, but everyone puts the meaning they want according to their prism. There, I don't know, but I'm going to talk about depression, about real depression. You don't cure depression with personal development and just moving your butt off the couch. It would be nice but it just doesn't work. When the meaning is lost, it is always possible to find it again, I am not saying that it is definitely lost. What are the differences between depressed and non-depressed people?

Profile picture for Blandine Mifsud

What are the differences between depressed and non-depressed people?

There are 2 kinds of depression:

  • Depression indogene (internal);
  • Depression exogen (due to an element ex TER AL).

Exogenous depression or reactive depression is a short-term depression and as its name suggests, it is a reaction to an external event (eg dismissal, death of a loved one, etc.), a trigger. The patient is better when he finds a solution (eg: new job, bereavement work, etc.).

If you consult this link ( Endogenous and exogenous depression: what are the differences?) or other sources you will discover this well-accepted consensus according to which it is considered that "in the case of endogenous depression, no identifiable external cause explains the depressive episode ".

Kevin, you've been reading me for a while so you shouldn't be surprised: I don't agree.

I think we should not confuse " there is no identifiable cause for depression" with "we have not yet succeeded in identifying a cause external to endogenous depression". I think there is a cause for endogenous depression: an organic and a genetic cause.

Besides, it's simple, in my opinion, this cause if we take the trouble to look, we can even… see it. Yes, yes, I assure you. Look at the illustration that you have chosen yourself to illustrate your answer to this same question. I don't know about you, but it jumps out at me.

Come on, I'll give you a hint: look at the general shape of these 2 skulls.

The skull of the depressed patient is, in my opinion, an endogenous depressed patient = he was born with a skull and a brain that made him depressed.

The patient on the right has a non-depressive skull and brain.

If you look at the 2 brains simultaneously and try to find the differences, focus on the general shape of these 2 skulls.

The non-depressed brain seems to be well balanced. It is center in the black rectangle. In the rear part there is a depression (a reinforcement).

If we were to draw a vertical line and separate this image, we would get 2 almost similar brain halves. On the other hand, in the brain of the depressed patient, we could not obtain 2 similar halves because this brain has an asymmetry which seems obvious to me.

Multiple studies confirm that symmetry (facial and body) is a sign of resilience and good health. The corollary being that asymmetric people are at proven risk of psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Functional depression is, in my opinion (this opinion is not personal, it is not unanimous far from it, and is limited only to my little person as far as I know), the result of a facial and neurological asymmetry. When the 2 cerebral hemispheres are asymmetrical, there are physiological and electrical disturbances at the level of the corpus collusum. Behavioral disturbances including depression can be observed in these asymmetric patients. We would therefore be born (in my opinion still) with a depressive brain or a non-depressive brain which depends on our degree of bodily and facial symmetry.

To come back to your question: What are the differences between depressed and non-depressed people? The major difference explaining the vulnerability to depression between depressed and non-depressed people is their difference from their neurological symmetry.

You have to reconnect with the real, simple, immediate, animal, and thus stop thinking about it and slowly killing your brain: `` mindfulness '' has a demonstrated effectiveness, by training you to no longer dare to do anything. other than '' here and now '' and not '' yesterday '' or '' tomorrow '': walking, running, listening, smelling smells, trying to 'pose' your 5 senses to reconnect with reality is very effective to forget about problems that are going round in the head. Whatever yesterday, it's already done, we can no longer do anything. What does tomorrow matter, if already today I am not alive? So already, live the present moment, make this moment solid, survive today and only then can you build tomorrow, even better. So sharpen your senses, prevent your brain from thinking, from 'brooding', reconnect yourself to reality, to nature,

Do you think too much?

To lower your ruminations, your brain, like lowering a hi-fi equalizer, suffocates it: the brain is the organ in the body that consumes the most oxygen. Slow down your breathing, take small breaths, stop your breathing for 10, 20 seconds at the end of inhalation and exhalation, regain control of your brain, prevent it from wandering, listen to your heart and your breathing, stop your thought at middle of a word, prevent him from finishing his sentence!

Take back control. All these techniques are "CBT", cognitive behavioral techniques, that psychiatric clinics teach, often too late, but very effective.

The control of the brain by the control of its fuel, oxygen, your breathing, comes from yoga which without really knowing it knew how to practice breathing techniques to better concentrate. It will always be useful, and not only against depression! Excellent `` control '' of your brain.

Medication can help, but in the short term as a boost, or to take away the anxiety that would block your recovery and your implementation of these tcc. Use in short term, they are an effective crutch, but not more than a year or even 1 month…!

Finally, in addition to removing the brake thanks to the drugs and breathing, the accelerator: find yourself a reason to live !!! Give up the previous reasons which, not effective enough, did not prevent you from getting depressed, and find yourself a project, yours, a crazy dream, a goal to achieve, against all odds! '' yes I can ''! Without a reason to live, without a dream, a goal to achieve, an ideal, even if not even a little crazy, we lack an engine. "Faith lifts mountains", have faith in your idea, project, ideal, and the higher it will be, the stronger will be your new reason for living! An example ? Helping your neighbor, saving the world, nature, abandoned dogs, entering politics, the associative world, etc. If so, together, we are stronger! And above all, it is a world of mutual aid, little known, but fantastic.

Ah, some really good stuff, finally:

Do theater, amateur, improvise: very funny, it 'takes you' out of 'your life' and forces you to play another role, very effective.

Write, put everything! As long as you have not "put" your thoughts on paper, they eat away at you. Writing them down lets you move on to another thought, not writing them down lets them go around in circles. Write them, on a post it, a sheet, a notebook, but write them, '' throw '' them! And once "there", think of something else, finally. Stick these post-its on the wall, classify them… Or throw the thought, the sheet, in the trash, and thus "move on", restart your life. Really, it works!

And get out, walk, then trot, then run! Thinking of each step, you are feet, the path, “here and now”….

Have a good new life! We have as many as we want, throw away the current one, make yourself the new one.

As long as there is life, there is hope. And vice versa.2.1k  viewsShow 24  positive votesShow shares2411What to do to get out of depression?

She can, but not all the time. Depression is a small death. It is the fruit of the loss of wanting to survive. The cause can be multiple. Depression follows a feeling of being in a hole… with no way out. Hopeless. It forces us to get out of our normal situation, to find a solution (it can be an awakening)… but also a simple solution to this apparently insurmountable problem at the same time. Someone who is perfectly stupid, who falls into a hole and cannot get out of it, will also go into depression. And will eventually die if he can't get out of his hole. (physically… thirsty, hungry…) the loss of a sphere of comfort is equivalent to being in a hole. What is the difference between burnout and depression?

Profile picture for Théophile Pion

Théophile Pion·June 3, 2020 Knowledge: English

Burnout is not depression.

The origin is not the same.

Let's illustrate the difference with a picture: burn out is to snow on the roof what depression is to termites.

Subjected to an excessive external pressure, the internal structure of the individual, his psychic framework, does not resist and collapses, like a house under the pressure of an excess of snow on the roof. The depression is more like the effect of termites: the frame also collapses, but because of an internal problem.

We often confuse depression with burnout. Indeed, in both cases the psychic structure of the individual is affected. The big difference is that in depression, the failure of the frame is not due to external pressure, but to an internal cause. An evil which eats away at the structure from the inside, and ends up no longer allowing the individual to resist normal pressure.

The field is not the same.

A person who experiences depression will generally be depressed in all of his fields of activity, while a person who is going through burnout will be especially in difficulty in the professional field. She retains the taste for private activities.

The movement is opposite.

Burnout is the result of a physiological imbalance which has psychological repercussions. It is the reverse in the case of depression.1.1k  views Show 4  positive votes4

When entering the long and laborious phase of withdrawal, which signifies the start of recovery, it is important to feel ready! Trust yourself! Why are people with high IQs prone to depression?

Rahma benyamina·December 11, 2019 Knowledge: Arabic

A new study has indicated that intelligent people are at greater risk of developing mental illness than their less intelligent peers and often suffer from anxiety-related physical issues, where researchers at Betzer College examined 3,715 Mensa members, who are intelligent people, and the review showed them to be suffering from anxiety and depression. Autism, ADHD and other disorders.

All participants had an IQ of over 130, well above the average of 85-115, and the study found that 20% of the smart group suffered from anxiety and depression compared to 10% of the population. Overall, and fascinatingly, participants also appear to be more prone to asthma, allergies, and weakened immunity.

Experts say the study provides an unprecedented view of the links between intelligence and mental illness, as well as the links between mood disorders and physical illnesses, while Dr Nicole Tetrault, co-author of the study, pointed out the high rate of mental illness in intelligent people may have affected the fact that people's intelligence is extremely hypersensitive, making them hypersensitive.

The study adds, “Our results are relevant because a large portion of these people suffer daily due to their excessive emotional and physical excess, and it is important for the scientific community to study high IQ, but for the physical discomfort, this isn't the first time that researchers have suggested that mental illness exacerbates inflammation in the body, however, this tends to be the clearest break in this relationship.

The authors underlined: "To our knowledge, no study of the psychological interaction between each of the variables has been studied, and we have sought a direct treatment of the question". Is there a relationship between increased cognitive ability (brain hyperactivity) and increased subsequent psychological and physiological immune responses?

To do this, the scientists examined the prevalence of mood disorders, anxiety, hyperactivity disorders, lack of attention, sensitivity to food and the environment, asthma. and autoimmune diseases, and a very intelligent lion compared to the national average, and they found a clear relationship between high intellectual capacity and all the psychological and physiological conditions they looked at In conclusion, they found said they thought people with hyperactivity in the brain also had hyperactivity in the body.1.6k  viewsShow 13  positive votesShow shares · Reply requested by Eva Esteve131

I once heard someone compare depression and suicide to

jumping out of a burning building .

This is the most accurate description I have ever seen.

Imagine living a life where you are constantly told that you are a failure. That you can't do nothing right. That your presence is a burden on your loved ones. You try to ignore it, you try to keep going, but slowly you lack the motivation to do anything. You are weakened by sleepless nights and lack of food because you don't feel hungry. You are no longer hungry.

Slowly, optimism turns to cynicism, and that into abject terror when you realize you are dying.

So you start trying to keep going, to reach out, to tell someone about the dark thoughts inside you, your desperate desire to find joy again. How you pray for relief, from God, your family, your friends, food, entertainment, sports ... you get so numb that you don't enjoy anything.

And inevitably, someone is listening to you. You hope for some comfort or some real advice, but what do we say? They offer you platitudes or criticism. Because in a society where everyone has to be happy most of the time, you have broken a sacred rule: Don't show any pain or vulnerability, because it makes you weak.

But you keep sending messages saying that you need help, that you need someone to notice you and be there for you and somehow ... nobody does.

So you feel everything and nothing, you don't feel any happiness and you just want it to stop. End it all by any means.

This is where you try. This is where you realize that living is painful and death looks better. Everything would then stop hurting.

So you jump out of that burning building, and whether or not you hope for somebody to save you, you haven't committed a sin. It is not selfish to find relief after so much pain.

You just tried to escape impossible torture. Burn or fall. Burn or fall.

I'd rather fall than burn. At least death would be faster than ... than this slow poisoning.

Mahen Ya·November 7, 2019 Former depressive Hello, Many describe the symptoms of depression. They are very numerous and it is therefore advisable to consult a professional if you suspect that you have depression. The duration of the symptoms as well as the quantity will determine the severity (subject to the advice of a doctor). Attention should be paid to changes in behavior which will depend a lot on how the person reacts. Personally, I do not fully identify with the behavioral changes stated in other answers. (This does not detract from their truths! Again it's personal) The most shocking is the pain, and paradoxically the lack of emotions. Let me explain, negative emotions are either light or extreme but never go away. (Or almost, but I remember(more)

The main factor of psychogenic depression in humans (as in animals!) Is getting stuck in a painful situation that seems hopeless. Most of the time, there is no need to dig into the "subconscious" and "buried pains" (psychoanalysis and ruminations increase the feeling of helplessness and depression!). • "Can I help you ?"
  • "I've never been through depression but I sympathize, you have the right to have worse days, you have time." etc .

"I had decided to go for a coffee / to go for a walk / to take a shower but in the end, I can't, I give up."

Above all, do not say:

  • "Sometimes you have to kick yourself in the ass to get better!"
  • (Who tells you that the person you're telling this to isn't already kicking themselves 1,000 times in order not to kill themselves?)
  • It would do you good to see people though!

What is the difference between clinical depression and existential depression?

A clinical depression can be due to temporary hazards, fatigue, accumulation of problems, loss of reference. Things that can be cured with proper treatment.

An existential depression calls into question everything that makes up the why of our life. And there the palliatives do not work. It is deeper because doubt does not find an answer, it often affects gifted adolescents, their precocious questioning while they are still deprived of answers, leads to these evils.

Only the answers will know how to calm this state. Either by helping and guiding the patient, or by giving him the means to find his answers.5.2k  viewsShow 15  positive votes · Reply requested by Celimene Melody 151

Where is the difference between sadness and depression? When can I say I am in depression?

Profile picture for Sarah Lee

Sarah lee· Updated May 22, 2019 PsychotherapistOriginal Answer: How do you tell if someone is going through depression instead of "just being sad"?

If you're talking about someone else, I think you have to ask. If you talk about yourself, you can question yourself a little more; how long does your depression last? Is this a feeling that you have experienced before? Do you know the reason why you are in pain?

In the end, in my opinion, it doesn't really matter that much to characterize your feelings as 'depression' or 'sadness' other than knowing when to ask for help or if you're curious. If you are worried about your feelings and you don't feel like you can deal with them on your own, it's okay to ask for help.

It is very difficult to judge the seriousness of someone else's feelings if you are an outside party. You don't know if he's downplaying out of fear, out of habit, to go unnoticed, for cultural reasons, or because he feels helpless.

It is better to take someone (or yourself) seriously and find that it is going fast now than to ignore them and find out later that they have suffered (or worse) because of your judgments.

When I was 16 I visited the doctor to seek help with my depression. The doctor advised me 'not everyone can be the life and soul of the party'. So I gave up and it took me another two years to try again.

Depression kills, you have to take it seriously.381  viewsShow 4  positive votes41

How Can You Help People With Depression?

Profile picture for Line Mourey

Line Mourey·Aug 16, 2020 Psychologist - psychotherapist Original answer: How can I help a person who is suffering from depression?

The role of those around you during depression:

From an external point of view, depression is a disease that can be difficult to understand since the body is not directly affected. It is not a flu or an amputation but a crippling mental illness on a daily basis. The benevolence of those around him as well as his non-judgmental listening will do a lot of good to the suffering person and will limit as much as possible his feeling of guilt and shame.

We will therefore do without “if I were you, I would do that”, “come on, move, tomorrow it will be better!”, “It's in your head” or even “there are people who have worse in life! life !". We do not ask someone who has no longer his leg to do a trail without prosthesis ... You can therefore reassure him by telling him that this disease affects a lot of people, that it is not a sign of weakness and that 'he is not alone. But above all, be present and listen to it.

If your loved one trivializes their discomfort and downplays it, you can also share your concerns about the suffering you are witnessing, verbalize the fact that it persists and that it is not trivial. Discussing the symptoms can promote awareness and an appointment with a professional. Getting into action can be difficult for people suffering from depression, so it is sometimes necessary to support them in this first contact with a doctor and to accompany him (without being too stuffy and intrusive).

You can also offer your help for some tasks to be carried out (without doing everything for all that), submit the idea of going for a walk to get some fresh air and socialize, ... All these little things will show him that he is not alone in this difficult time and that he can count on you. Don't be too pushy either and listen to his rhythm. Don't expect him to have fun in the moment.

As a loved one, it is necessary to accept and know the illness from which the loved one suffers in order to better support them. Also accept that we will not be able to help her move forward if she refuses it but that we can provide support. So even though you may not act like a doctor or a therapist, you are nonetheless being present! And it is not negligible. Do not forget yourself either and take time for yourself!

Where does the French depression come from?

Profile picture for Justin Jasper

Justin jasper·November 8, 2018 Franco-SwissOriginal answer: Where does the French depression come from?

Some tracks:

  • a culture of lament and judgment

In France if it's good we say nothing, if it's bad (or not French) we criticize. Diantre, positivism!

  • a wobbly and disconnected political system

There, it's heavy. No adaptation since 1958. The Fifth Republic was tailor-made for General de Gaulle. All the powers in the hands of one man. No consensus. The next is working to undo what the previous one did.

  • centralization and excessive taxation

All important orders come from Paris. This encourages local politicians to inaction of the kind it's not my problem, the orders come from above. The citizens are considered as cash cows by the French state apparatus.

  • rural desertification for urban crowding

Besides the fact that the French countryside has been polluted by chemical treatments for 60 years, it is emptying to fill the hutches of cities. (Sorry for the townspeople.)

  • a fatalistic way of thinking

Nothing's going well, so we don't care.

Otherwise the French are resourceful and know how to do things very well if they take the trouble. But all these factors added up do not help improve the morale of the average French.1k  viewsShow 15  positive votes15

Isn't depression just an inability to take charge of yourself and solve your problems rather than a real illness?

Profile picture for Pierre-Laurent Sisley

Pierre-Laurent Sisley·Updated August 17, 2020 Degree in Psychology , University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense ( Diploma obtained in 2018 )

To answer you, I will just come back to the scientific facts since I am studying clinical psychology (master).

During my studies, we saw the 2 tables of depression: pure psychological AND SOMATIC!

Depression immediately encompasses body AND mind . We are an indivisible ALL: any physical illness ends up affecting the psyche at a given moment and vice versa, a mental pathology acts on the general metabolism of the body. Our psyche is based on an organ of flesh and blood, the brain, which also distributes & manages various hormones produced by other various glandular organs (thymus, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands, etc.). There is a constant back and forth between these organs & our brain. Depending on our mood, we will produce more or less of certain hormones & our general metabolism will show the effects: apathy or hyper-activity, extraversion or tendency to isolation, weight gain or loss, insomnia or hypersomnia, etc.

Depression is linked to a low production of dopamine (hormone secreted during our moments of pleasure & which puts us in a state of occasional enjoyment) and / or abnormalities in the metabolism of serotonin(hormone secreted during positive stress or adaptive behavior in the face of a negative context or challenge that makes us feel a state of deep well-being). Dopamine is often referred to as the "pleasure hormone" when serotonin is nicknamed "the happiness or joy hormone" by neurologists & endocrinologists. Scientists & healthcare professionals have observed the propensity of depressed people to fall into addictions (sweet food, alcohol, activities which excite the sensation of pleasure) in order to boost their secretion of dopamine. However, the increase in dopamine in our body is done to the detriment of serotonin which is the hormone regulating our mood & our adaptation to stress as well as our sleep. The development process & neuronal transmission of dopamine is antagonistic to that of serotonin. This is why the pleasure attached to an addictive source is so harmful for the mood in the long run: the serotonin which balances our psyche is then less secreted & less well distributed in the body. Normally, in a healthy psyche, these two hormones are produced & distributed in perfect balance. In a depressive pattern, serotonin is clearly deficient & poorly distributed in the brain & the rest of the body. these two hormones are produced & distributed in perfect balance. In a depressive pattern, serotonin is clearly deficient & poorly distributed in the brain & the rest of the body. these two hormones are produced & distributed in perfect balance. In a depressive pattern, serotonin is clearly deficient & poorly distributed in the brain & the rest of the body.

It is very difficult to know whether depression comes first from physical stress that has reached the psyche later or the other way around. Only a psychotherapeutic or psychiatric follow-up will be able to elucidate this point or in any case approach a response in connection with the truth of the patient's story. But ultimately, it doesn't matter! The depressed person comes to seek help to get out of it. The clinical psychologist, the neuropsychologist or the psychiatrist who takes care of her is not there to judge her: he is there to support her & TREAT her. Point.

A depressed person is a genuine patient. His body often bears the scars: lack of sleep (deep circles, permanently drawn lines resulting in early wrinkles, etc.), eating problems (bulimia or anorexia, craving for sugar, etc.), various addictions (alcohol, drugs, sugar, sex…), accelerated aging due to a state of chronic stress which acts by acidifying the blood & a general inflammatory state at the cellular level (each patient will have his particular weak organs which will react more). And then there are psychopathological behaviors: significant isolation or frantic search for contacts (superficial => just being surrounded by people to fill the social void & the intimate void), risk-taking (fast car driving, extreme sports, whatever will put the body to the end of its limits), etc. Depression does not show itself only through the cliché of the isolated individual displaying a sad face: it can also show itself in a pleasant, very extroverted, very active exterior. It is called "smile depression" ("smilingdepression "). This type of depression is difficult to define because its appearance is judged positively by those around it because of clichés about human relations & depression.

Depression is indeed a real disease with its precise symptoms (cf. DSM-5 => having 5 of the 9 symptoms on a regular & prolonged basis / psychoanalytic approach => very specific relational patterns). Neurobiology & endocrinology, partially studied in psychoclinical studies, have shown through scientific research that the brain is permanently affected by depression: neuronal connections & synaptic transmissions concerning dopamine but especially serotonin are disrupted. These are facts observed in the lab and on living patients. It is objective. Here we are in the medical field: clinical psychology sometimes enters this field.

As a bonus, I leave a link to an article Mechanisms of depressionpublished on the Swiss medical popularization site Planète santé CH . This article perfectly completes my remarks & confirms the current scientific conclusions: in depression, the physical & mental spheres are so interwoven that any therapeutic care that wants to be effective must absolutely act on both levels simultaneously or almost . This is essential.

I understand that you want to see depression as the result of a lack of vigor & a refusal to take responsibility for your life. It would be so simple, especially for society, which could thus CULPABILIZE the sick… with possibly a refusal to take charge of their medico-psychological care. It would also be a way for those around them (professional, family, friendly) to clear themselves of any responsibility for the onset of the disease in the patient. We must stop seeing depression only from a purely psychological angle: it is a neuropsychological pathology, regardless of whether the cause is purely somatic or psychic at the outset. In the end, the whole being is affected, physically and morally. The depressed does not need to be judged (we do not do it for a cancer patient, do we?) on the basis of limited NON-SCIENTIFIC criteria and reductive clichés: he simply needs that we help him to cure himself & get back in hand. This is why recourse to a professional is better for support than the help of those around him, even loving ones: neutrality allows an OBJECTIVE relationship, without prejudice for or against the patient who suddenly becomes FREE to speak up. And words heal much better than a psychotropic drug, believe me! They can even save a life! It is lived and seen in progress too. This is why the professions of the "psychologist" exist in order to we help them to take care of themselves and to get back in hand. What is the essential thing to fight against depression?

Quentin Pereira·Aug 2, 2018 Master GEMAREC at University of Fundamental and Applied Science ( 2017 - today )Depression is one of the only illnesses that can be completely healed with the emotion and heart of another. The music, the attention, the environment in which the person is bathed, all things capable of affecting the person on his own feelings is important to the point sometimes to make feel his discomfort negligible next to the pleasure that these things provide. 'she found out. The big problem is that these people tend to let it go on their own. You have to keep an activity that values you and makes you feel alive in fact, create, write, educate yourself. Having experienced this state, I can testify that it is impossible, because it is the very fact of depression. The best, or at least the least evil, is to become aware of it, and to tell yourself that this state is not normal, that it will not necessarily last, to remember that it was better before, and that will be better afterwards. It all depends on the possible prospects because if we see the future completely blocked, then, after a while, only one solution in my opinion: drugs! Above all, do not feel guilty about having to take an antidepressant, any more than a diabetic must take insulin to compensate for a deficient metabolism. Why does depression exist?

Profile picture for Jacques Van Rillaer

Jacques Van Rillaer·October 22, 2018  Formerly Professor of Psychology at the University of Louvain ( 1974 - 2009 )

Various hypotheses can be formulated to understand the function of depression for the survival of Homo sapiens.

- Depression can be considered as the exaggeration of a useful affect: sadness, which motivates to change the situation and which, on the other hand, arouses compassion and help from loved ones.

- Depression promotes the process of emotional disengagement vis-à-vis goals that are too difficult or unachievable. It is a way of closing up shop, in an environment experienced as too demanding. It is, writes Christophe André, "a withdrawal to save and protect yourself from things in life, which we can no longer face. Its only virtue, initially, is therefore that it can have an analgesic effect, freeing us from the pain of having to face [1] ”.

- Depression is a kind of hibernation. In a situation where action becomes difficult or impossible (eg imprisonment, serious illness), it is in our best interest to live in slow motion and no longer have compelling desires, waiting for better days. An argument in favor of this hypothesis is the similarity of the biochemical state of animals that hibernate and animals that depress [2] .

- The depression that occurs in a weakened individual promotes the survival of the group: it leads him to reduce his diet and facilitates its disappearance. Depression illustrates the mercilessness of biological evolutionary processes

There is hardly a decisive argument for choosing one hypothesis over another. Several are moreover reconcilable.

Depression is a self-reinforcing process, whether the origin is external or internal. Moreover, in many cases there is an association to varying degrees of these origins. Both are potentially fatal and lead to successful suicide, the proportion being of course greater for so-called endogenous or unipolar depressions. When we have not been loved, pampered, supported as we should have been, the child feels guilty. He pushed back that guilt, fought against his disappointment to keep growing. In adulthood, this guilt will push him to self-punish by refraining from tasting happiness. This is why it is very important to learn to exist alone before being able to live with others.

Can you be depressed and not know it?

Profile picture for Cyril Malka

Cyril Malka·March 5, 2019 cognitive and behavioral psychologist at Malka ( 1989 - present )

Not only can one be depressed and not know it, it is also an extremely common case.

There are several reasons for this.

1. Depression can be expressed very differently from person to person.

Some may experience insomnia, be unable to eat more than a few bites, have trouble concentrating, and feel so miserable that they want to end their life.

Others may not necessarily feel miserable, but nothing interests them. Not even the activities they loved before. They will sleep 12 hours a day and yet feel tired and feel sluggish, uninspiring, and useless.

2. Depression most often develops gradually

We don't wake up one morning and, frankly, we are depressed. It is something that develops slowly over time. But it is true that for those who have not seen us for a while, for them the change is visible. And maybe also for us after a while.

3. There can be a good reason for feeling bad

If we have health problems, a difficult divorce, or if we have lost our job or whatever, it just makes sense to us that we are not feeling our best. In fact, it would be weird if that sort of thing left us unmoved.

So we put that down to what's happening to us. We find our reaction "normal" and the word "depression" does not occur to us. Also because we imagine that depression has other symptoms that we do not necessarily have (see point 1).

4. There is no obvious reason for depression

According to the studies done on depression by Aaron T. Beck, there are people who simply have a tendency to see things so that they are depressed. Even if there is no obvious reason, they find one.

It's a way of thinking that's more common than you might think. So, since there is no obvious reason, we don't see depression.

There may be other reasons why you don't know you are depressed, this list is not exhaustive.

But as a general rule, then, yes, one can perfectly be in depression and not know it.31.3k  viewsShow 133  positive votesShow shares1331How do I get out of the cycle of depression, permanent self-flagellation, the meandering feelings of worthlessness and mediocrity?

Why do so many people suffer from depression these days?

Profile picture for Marine Lefebvre

Depression is indeed taking on epidemic proportions. So much so that the WHO considers it today as the leading cause of morbidity and disability in the world with more than 300 million people affected and an increase of more than 18% from 2005 to 2015.

In addition to the usually accepted causes, it would seem that several factors related to our current lifestyles are to be considered:

  • bio-chemical and hormonal imbalances due to food, medication
  • social and / or professional pressure
  • psycho-social and environmental stress
  • exhaustion, acceleration of the pace of life
  • be off-center in relation to one's inner nature and to Nature
  • difficulty in relating to the other (s)
  • the precariousness of systems at all levels
  • immediacy, "liquidity", "ephemerality"
  • the lack of meaning, of projection into a stable future
  • the impossibility of living long-term values (commitment, loyalty, loyalty)
  • the absence of "time" for oneself, the impossibility of respecting one's rhythm
  • the feeling of no longer controlling anything
  • competition and comparison, permanent internal and external evaluation
  • the pressure to surpass oneself, the injunction to happiness, to perfection

Finally, the urgent tends to take precedence over the important. In a society which is accelerating at all levels, when we are overheating, then our body manages to "unplug" or "go wild". The "too much" ends up falling into the "void" of oneself.

Paradoxically, we disconnect from ourselves in order to survive.9.2k  viewsShow 215  positive votesShow sharesCannot be reproduced2151012

How do you hide your depression from others?

Profile picture for Luca Rizzo

Luca Rizzo·October 21, 2020 Knowledge: English

I understand this question, depression is taking its toll.

I personally have not experienced this but my heart beats for a person who experienced it a very short time ago.

And I sincerely think that it should not be hidden, especially at a young age, let me explain:

  • You have to accept your depression, and by hiding in various characters, you don't know each other less and less. You have to know yourself and love yourself as you are, if you hide behind another face you only deny yourself (you don't accept yourself as you are). Often times what helps a person with depression is the importance they are given, but if you use a way to disguise yourself as someone else, compliments, kindness, and whatever other people are going to do with you. saying positives are not going to be attributed to you, but to the character behind whom you are hiding. And so you are only going to love the character that you created for yourself and you are going to put yourself down compared to that character: it only increases your depression. It is counterproductive.
  • You have to trust the goodwill of the human being: I know from experience that people learn that someone sees such a situation want to help, support, give support. And it is by showing yourself to its fens in your difficult phases that you will be able to say to them indirectly: I need help, please, I am badly in my skin.
  • You will surely say to me: "maybe for you, the world is full of unicorns, but wake up, people are not all nice to everyone, and knowing my weak points will allow them to ridicule me, annihilate me. " And I'll tell him it's true, in the world there are idiots, that's why you have to be wary: You have to determine the people who are interested in you and try to help you and the people who want put you down or get you in trouble. How? 'Or' What ? You have to try to see what the person's goal is: Is he there to get to know you, to help you morally and to value you more than him? OR Is he looking for his own advantage in you to make himself more powerful? It's' one of the points to recognize true friends from fakes. It is important to show your weak points to your true friends, because they will have the goal of helping us. This is why you should not have a double character. (the only time it is beneficial to play a character is when you experience insults and mockery: telling yourself that you don't criticize me but this character can help enormously)

However, if you still want to hide your depression here are some important points:

If a real friend asks you a question about your condition: "Are you okay today?" And that it's a heavy day depressively speaking, allow yourself to honestly say NO to him, if he is really a friend he will ask you several questions and put you in the center of the conversation and he will surely do you a lot of good.

Thank you to the people who will have read this answer, I hope to have been able to make you realize that hiding your depression is not a step towards fulfilling life but that it sank all the more into this same depression

How does it feel to have severe depression?

Profile picture for Jenna Ravenstone

Jenna ravenstone· Updated January 6, 2019

Hello,

Severe depression, in most cases, is mild depression that has gone untreated and got worse.

In English, we classify depression as follows:

1. Mild / Light - the person is unhappy but functional

2. Moderate / Moderate - the person is slightly impaired

3. Serious / Serious - the person is very weak

4. Severe / Very serious - helpless or suicidal person

Of course, depression can get serious very quickly in some cases. But it usually starts with minor symptoms. This is when we have the best chance of intercepting it with treatment.

My opinion, based on years of study, is that depression is an emotion. All emotions are messengers that give us specific messages. For depression, the message is: "You are having too much emotional pain and you need to reduce it."

Some people disagree and prefer to view depression as a complex illness with interacting biological, psychological and social causes. They are not mistaken, but they tend to confuse the symptoms with the causes.

For me, we don't treat depression, we treat the emotional pain that causes it. Of course, drugs designed to reduce the severity of symptoms can help us speed up this treatment.

My advice to anyone is that if you have recurring depression, take treatment before it escalates into a major crisis. When you don't hear the message of an emotion, it tends to intensify. Then the depression becomes very serious.

Thanks for the question.459  viewsShow 6  positive votes6

Hello,

I am a Christian and people often think that depression is only for a certain category of people, especially in the church, when it is not. Depression can affect anyone and anytime, it does not depend on rank or social status, even less religion of a position one occupies. Knowing this is already a big step because when the depression comes you won't be in denial or caught off guard.

These few words sum up what I myself have experienced and that I live on a daily basis.

I have these few verses that I repeat when depression comes knocking on my door:

  1. Misfortune often strikes the righteous, but the Lord always delivers them (Psalm 34:19)
  2. But darkness will not always reign On the earth where there are now anguish: If the past times have covered with reproach The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, The times to come will cover with glory The land next to the sea, beyond the Jordan, The land of the Gentiles (Isaiah 9: 1)
  3. And I recite Psalm 91 and Psalm 23.

Usually I read at least 10 of these verses if I can sing, laugh and after a while I feel my mind better and freer. this is how I get one more victory.137  viewsShow 1  positive vote1
