Johnny Depp's trial: a scathing first defeat for Amber Heard

This is the most publicized judicial series in recent weeks. And it was the Fairfax court, not far from Washington, in the United States, that was chosen for this great public unpacking.

Two sides oppose each other: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, married from 2015 to 2016, who accuse each other of acts of violence. But the trial is at the initiative of the actor of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, who attacks his ex-wife for defamation after an article in the Washington Post in 2018 in which she claims to have been a victim of domestic violence.

The stakes of this trial amount to millions of dollars. If Johnny Depp claims $50 million, in compensation for the damage suffered by the loss of his career, Aquaman's actress claims double, because of the "physical violence and abuse" allegedly inflicted on him by her former husband. And the two actors are ready to do anything to win: revelations about the actor's penis, star witnesses, SMS and videos, for a trial that should continue to spread over the next two weeks.

There would be "sufficient evidence", for the judge

But this Wednesday, May 4, 2022, it's the cold shower for Amber Heard. The actress has just suffered a first defeat. As she prepares to testify at the stand, Mera's interpreter in Aquaman and her lawyers have filed a motion in which they request the dismissal of Johnny Depp's complaint. A classic demand, at mid-trial, as reported by Deadline.

A motion rejected by Justice Penney Azcarate, in charge of the case, which states that "the jurors had sufficient evidence to assess whether [Amber Heard]'s statements were about the complainant, whether the statements were published and were false, and whether the accused made these statements knowing they were false". However, we must not put the cart before the horse: such a judgment does not yet mean that Johnny Depp has won his trial. The final decision will rest with the jurors, not the judge.
