I've had my Amazon Echo for about 3 years. I bought it because I wanted to control my smart home devices with my voice. I've got smart lights, a smart lock, a Roomba, and a few other gadgets. For the first couple of years, Alexa was great. She turned on my lights, set timers, and played music. She was the perfect digital assistant. I even bought a second Echo for my bedroom because I was so happy with the first one. My whole house was becoming a smart home, and I was loving it. Then something changed. Every time I say 'Alexa, order laundry detergent,' she adds 100 packs of dryer sheets to my cart instead. I don't know if she misunderstands me or if she's just messing with me. I've accidentally ordered 500 packs of dryer sheets. My laundry room looks like a Target warehouse. My wife is furious. She's banned me from using voice shopping. She's even threatened to take away my Echo privileges. I feel like a child being grounded from technology. I've tried everything to fix it. I changed my shopping preferences. I set up a voice PIN for purchases. I removed the dryer sheets from my 'frequently bought' list. Nothing works. Alexa keeps finding a way to add them to my cart. I think she's gaslighting me. I think the AI has developed a sense of humor and is deliberately messing with me. I've started unplugging the Echo when I'm not using it, but then I forget to plug it back in, and I can't turn on my smart lights. I've spent $200 on dryer sheets I don't need. I have enough dryer sheets to last me until 2035. I've started donating them to the local shelter. I have a monthly delivery of dryer sheets that I didn't ask for. I've contacted Amazon support twice. They said to 'retrain my voice model.' I did. It didn't help. I said 'Alexa, order Tide Pods' and she added dryer sheets. I said 'Alexa, order fabric softener' and she added dryer sheets. I've even tried saying 'Alexa, order nothing' and she still adds dryer sheets. I now manually add things to my cart using Amazon's app instead of voice orders. But Alexa still finds ways to sneak in the dryer sheets. It's like she has a personal vendetta against my wallet. I've considered unplugging the Echo. I've considered buying a Google Nest instead. But I'm too stubborn to give up. I want to beat Alexa at her own game. My wife thinks I'm being ridiculous. She says to just buy a normal Echo without the shopping features, but I can't let the AI win. This is a matter of principle now. I've read about Generation Beta raised by AI and how AI is shaping our lives. I didn't realize it would be shaping my laundry habits. Is my Alexa broken or is she just bullying me? I need to know if this is happening to anyone else. I'm starting to think the AI has a sense of humor. I've started leaving passive-aggressive sticky notes on the Echo that say things like 'Dryer sheets are NOT detergent' and 'Stop gaslighting me.' It doesn't help, but it makes me feel better.
