India: Bollywood's Mainstream Punjabi Songs Accused Of Stereotyping Indian Women As Consumerists

The importance  of Hindi-Romantic-Songs in Indian cinema

Nothing like a good old Romantic Hindi Song to complement a new indian movie  and oftentimes, the music is just as important and popular to the extent where they'd sell  just as much as the movies themselves.

We have all grooved to Punjabi songs that are musically catchy and have been played in our house parties and DJ Parties and had the harmless classic Bollywood songs such as -Tum Hi Ho -Aashiqui 2 - Kar Gayi Chull (From "Kapoor & Sons (Since 1921)") in our playlists.

Welcome to the new Bollywood

On Youtube, there's a new type Hindi songs and often times , we don't realize when we listening to these peppy numbers that they are filled with problematic lyrics and storylines in the songs which normalize that girls are Gold Diggers, materialistic, and are only concerned with material possessions.

Punjabi songs account for 15% of streamed Indian music, making up an industry worth Rs. 700 crores.  

Most of the Punjabi songs these days show relationships where women are demanding things from their husbands and boyfriends. The portrayal of women in songs is to show them eye candy and satisfying the male gaze.

Naah

The Song begins with a woman (Norah Fatehi) in the scene shows her broken shoes to her boyfriend (Hardy Sandhu), The lyrics describe how the girl keeps on asking for things like shoes, earrings, etc. She is labelled as a “gold-digger” which states that women date men for materialistic stuff. The entire song revolves around demands and how Hardy keeps singing because he cannot keep her happy. The portrayal of women is sexist, and she is objectified to cater to the Male Gaze. The woman in the video is used as a mere prop.

Lehenga

In the song for “Lehenga,” we see a good-looking couple arguing at an international location. The girl is seen dressed up and all glammed up. She is pissed off at her boyfriend/partner for not getting her an expensive lehenga. By the end, her man agrees to his lady love's request.

Another Punjabi song that are the names of the Car brands is Jaguar and Lamborghini.

In the Lamborghini song, the songline Lamborghini Chali Jaaniyo the girl in the music video is flirtatiously asking her friend to give her a ride in his Lamborghini.

In the song Jaguar by SukhE ft. Bohemia, the singer keeps singing about the girl asking for a Jaguar in return for her love labelling her as a Gold Digger Woman. The guy in the song is shown as the only earning partner who is trying hard to fulfill his girlfriend's wish of purchasing a Jaguar.

After delivering the super hit Lamborghini. The Lamborghini hit maker made a new song named Prada. In the Song Prada, the girl is constantly demanding a Prada in return for her attention and is telling him to go away if he doesn't fulfill her demand for getting Prada.

Most of the Punjabi songs have the title of the song as a Brand and end up gaining millions of views. As much as these songs are catchy and groovy musically. The lyrics and the depiction are absolutely problematic. The women in the Punjabi songs are depicted as demanding something or the other from their partner.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India predicts that it is working women – affluent, fashion-forward, and beauty-conscious – who will lead the growth of India’s $9 billion luxury market. Most of the young and Urban Indian women are now financially well off and self-reliant that they shop branded stuff of consumer goods without a man spending a penny for her. Then why is this shift in women’s consumer behaviour and her goals is not reflected in these Punjabi music videos?
