The Rise Software As A Service: How American Start Ups Have Raised Billions In The First Half Of 2021

By YEET MAGAZINE  | Posted  0435 GMT (1235 HKT) August 23, 2021

Of the $ 150 billion raised by American start-ups in the first half of 2021, nearly a third was captured by companies offering a “software as a service” model.

Pandemic might have hit hard but American start-ups have nothing to complain about. In the first half of 2021, they raised $ 150 billion, according to the latest report from specialist data provider Pitchbook. The record for the year 2020, which stood at $ 164.3 billion, has every chance of being broken this year. But these 150 billion are not distributed equitably in the ecosystem. Some sectors are more attractive than others. Retail review.

The "SaaS" cash machine

Almost a third of the amounts raised in the first half of 2021 was injected into “SaaS”, ie $ 50.7 billion. Appeared ten years ago, “software as a service” is a cloud-based model. To access the software, all you have to do is go to a website and enter your login details. No need to install the software on your computer anymore.

Start-ups are massively opting for this model because it ensures recurring income, with subscriptions being billed monthly or annually. Cash flow forecasting is in fact simplified. “SaaS” is now present in all areas: marketing, videoconferencing, finance, advertising… Even industries that were once reluctant, such as banking and insurance, are increasingly opting for this software in “SaaS” mode. ". According to Gartner, this industry is expected to generate 122.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2021 (+ 19% compared to 2020) and 145.4 billion dollars in 2025.

The martingale of fintech

With its $ 3.4 billion raised in two installments (January and February 2021), the Robinhood trading application is the perfect example to illustrate the attractiveness of American fintechs. In total, these finance start-ups raised $ 24.2 billion in the first half of 2021, for an average ticket of $ 37.2 million. This sector is particularly large as it encompasses payments, credit, savings, business financial services and cryptocurrencies.

FinTech: fundraising record for the sector in the first half of the year

“We know that we are moving towards the digitalization of means of payment, cash management and even accounting. This is why fintechs are so attractive, ”observes David Sainteff, partner at Global Founders Capital. These start-ups have the advantage of capturing information that is worth gold: payment data. The majority of fintechs, whether in BtoB or BtoC, must connect to their users' bank accounts to offer their service. It is no coincidence that the Gafa are all developing financial services .

Biotech, under the effect of Covid

Ansun Biopharma, SpringWorks Therapeutics, Cullinan Oncology… these names are not known to the general public but they are to investors. In the first half of 2021, US biotechs and start-ups in the pharmaceutical sector raised nearly $ 20.3 billion, or 70% more than in the first half of 2020. “Covid-19” biotechs, which participated in the development of a vaccine or treatment against the coronavirus, have been particularly supported by investment funds.

Covid: French biotechs are asking for resources for their research

The Covid effect does not justify all the enthusiasm around this sector. All these biotechs are reaching high stages of maturity, which results in the commercialization of their technologies, which reassures investment funds. Even if their income is often non-existent, these start-ups are increasingly partnering with large pharmaceutical companies or other biotechs. An element of confidence for investors. Because an alliance sometimes ends with an acquisition.
